Sadly, the 2nd baseman and shortstop are protected by wuss rules on the double play. 1st baseman, not so much.

my guess is to give sale the extra rest. maybe hes not 100 percent. or maybe depending how the game goes. they bring in sale in the 4th or 5th inning to finish the game.
