Record for most players scoring a TD in one season?

According to BB, the Saints had 18 different players score TDs so far this season.

I generally remember that the Pats were on track to challenge the record a couple years back, and finally either tied it or fell one short. Does anybody recall the details?

We missed it by one TD, so we own it with 87 Rams and 2000 Broncos at 21 Players-

New England (14-0) could set several NFL team and individual records today: With 34 points, the Patriots would surpass the 1998 Minnesota Vikings (556) for the most points in a season; with four touchdowns, they would surpass the NFL mark for a season, 70, set by the 1984 Dolphins; and if someone new, like veteran wideout Troy Brown, were to find his way into the end zone, the team would establish a record for most players to score a TD in a season, topping the mark of 21, held by the 1987 Rams and the 2000 Broncos.
