RB DJ Foster released, DT Darius Kilgo claimed

Yeah, I thought that was weird too. The player doesn't have a choice if claimed. Seems weird that other teams would cater to the whims of a fringe roster guy. I suspect that Howe's misspeaking, and he means that several teams reached out to him to see if interested in joining their practice squads and that Foster chose the Patriots'. But I could be wrong of course.
Maybe they let him know he would likely be waived later and he didn't want to be bouncing around and sees a more permanent opportunity with the Pats.

Jeff Howe has responded (wasn't me who tweeted this). He's saying that he wasn't misquoted, but that the other teams really were catering to the whims of a fringe roster guy. Very interesting to me, and it adds a little more context to the Brad Childress debacle with Garrett Mills in 2006.

A claim is a claim no matter what so if a Team puts in a claim Player X have to go. A active Roster Check is much more than a Taxi Squad check.

Yes, but the point Howe is making is that the teams called the player's agent before making the claim, and the agent told them that Foster would prefer to remain a Patriot on their practice squad. The teams obliged and didn't claim him; probably figured the marginal increase for the 53rd man on the roster wasn't worth the hassle of an aggravated player.

Regarding the paychecks, the Patriots have been known to pay salaries that are comparable to league minimum 53 man roster checks to PS players they really like.

So, essentially, Foster had the opportunity to be on someone's active roster and maybe get snaps in games, and chose instead to not play in any games but remain in NE's system.

This guy gets it.
