how many remember raymond when he was here with patriots?
helluva CB, one of the fastest players patriots ever had.
also, shall we say, some 'anger management problems'.
anyone know where he is now, what he's doing?

No idea what he's up to now, but I do remember him as a player.

He was an excellent shut-down corner. Watch the tape of the 85 AFCC and see what he does to Clayton and Duper all game long.

Yeah, a heck of a coverguy. Dreadful hands, though. He dropped a ton of interceptions.

If I recall, I think he lost most of his savings by his agent who put him in some poor real estate investments. I'm pretty sure it was him.

oh yeah, i remember that now.
he could really close on the ball tho. made 3 trips to hawaii.
i haven't seen a CB like him, tall, lean & rangy, in a long time.
or is my memory going again?

good right hand

All I can think of is his confrontation with McDonough, and that was after a victory.......
that may be the last time, ever, that a sportswriter cold****s an nfl player.
looks like raymond's grown up some.
isn't in coaching, tho. houston's my hometown. working as a HS coach is intensely political, in some cases not worth it. i'm surprised that university of houston hasn't brought him on board.
or maybe he doesn't have the temperament to coach.

Unlike Haynes and Law, Clayborn rarely went for the interception, preferring to knock the ball down rather than chance getting beat on a big play.

I don't remember him dropping interceptions, but it was a long time ago.

No doubt his all time team leadership in interceptions, (tied by Ty?) was more

due to his longevity than anything else.

Interceptions weren't his strong suit.

He used to totally frustrate some damn good receivers, though.

I've always wanted to hear a version of that that wasn't told by an Irish writer that was personally involved in the incident.

Being Irish myself, I've heard plenty of "war stories". Let's just say they get better over the years and beers.

By the way, Ray was embarassed by the incident and Mrs. McDonough says he is a wonderful guy. You'll have to take my word for that as I'll never find the article with Mrs. McDonough's comments again, I'm sure.

Great, tough, consistent player IMO.

An NFL player with anger management issues? Hard to believe.

Version I remember is that Clayborn allegedly went to put his finger on Will's chest and poked him in the eye and the Southie in Will came out..1,2,3...
IIRC, Clayborn was fined and Will was not dsiciplined at all.....

Clayborn was the shutdown corner for the Pats in the 80's. He indirectly helped Ronnie Lippett to become a darn good CB (opposing QBs would avoid throwing to Clayborn's side).

I remember Clayborn. He played alongside HOFer Michael Haynes until Haynes went to the Raiders. Tim Fox was in that backfield too. Probably the best defensive backfield the Pats ever had.

I don't remember him having anger management problems though. What did he do?

I bow to your googling skills. That wasn't the article though.

A bit too much malarkey in that one.

I seriously doubt there was time to utter "you know what you just did" between the eye poke and the sucker punch and have never heard that before.

In the version I read, Clayborn was very embarassed and apologetic and Mrs. McDonough said he was a wonderful guy, but it never said Ray and Will became chums.

Stories are like wine, they get better with time.

He was a super guy, too. One year when I was very actively involved in the Stoughton Little League, I went over to see him at his home, and invited him down to my team's opening game. I never thought he would come, but just before the game, there he was, in the dugout with my kids and they were excited ... and he spent time with them too. We won the game, and even won the town champinship that year.

Once before I was in Jim Nance's home in Mattapan before Imoved to Stoughton and invited him down to the Mattapan Little League opening day, and he came, too.

He had the biggest White poodles I have ever seen.

NEM, you must know.

What really happened?

I think it went like this.

Clayborn: Hi Will. (slips on bar of soap, falls awkwardly.)

McDonough: You don't know what you're doing! (strikes fighting pose, thrusts fist, slaps armpit).

McDonough: And there's more where that came from!
