Rapaport: Blount and Pats have mutual interest

That would be hard since he had only 299 regular season carries.
Regular season, yes.

He did take some handoffs in the playoffs however, where he averaged 3.1 ypc.

No reason to think that they paid Burkhead ''over'' Blount or Gilmore ''over'' Butler. ''Signed first'' rarely means ''signed instead of.''

In each case the budget can probably contain both men if they want it. Plenty of cap space to go around. You need more than one RB or CB to win championships anyways. And neither Gilmore or Burkhead play their yet-to-be-signed counterpart's exact role.

Just because they paid these other guys first doesn't mean that Burkhead got any of Blount's money or Gilmore got any of Butler's
By "first" you mean turning down Butler's asking price for well over a year and then going out and making an outsider the highest paid defensive player in franchise history on the very first day of free agency?

Yes, with DMac counting as an 11m dollar cap hit and Gilmore pulling in a 13.5m dollar AAV, it's not only safe to assume that Butler probably isn't in the team's long term plans, but also that some of the money that may have gone to him went towards bringing Gilmore aboard.

I think we can agree that the signing of those players certainly doesn't prevent the other ones from staying, but I can definitely see why Butler and Blount may feel that other options were chosen over them. As another poster mentioned, there's not much loyalty here, and there's certainly not a tendency to pay for past production. The good news for us is that their system works very well.

After losing a completely different cornerback in free agency, yes. Am I the only one that remembers Logan Ryan? Belichick met the market for Gilmore largely to replace Ryan on the roster. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Butler, whose agent has been making unreasonable demands based on Butler's bargaining position ath Belichick is under no obligation to attempt to meet. There is no indication that Belichick intends to do anything other than have Butler on his roster going forward.

It's a far better argument that Burkhead 'replaced' Blount than that Gilmore "replaced" Butler.

i don't think that's safe to assume at all, With the cap going up at a remarkable rate, a few large contracts in pass protection only make sense. Especially because we have some nice cost savings at the moment on offense due to having a lot of youth and lesser-paid veterans on the O-line and at RB.

Butler and Blount may feel that way but emotions have a way of being dead wrong. We had to replace a cornerback regardless of whether or not Butler stays, enter Gilmore. Burkhead is just a good investment since he's a solid jack of all trades who BB seems to think will play well in his system. The guy who should be looking over his shoulder with the signing of Burkhead is Deion Lewis, not Blount.

Disagree I wouldn't be shocked if James White is traded for a mid round pick.

His value has never been higher having the game of his life on the biggest stage can't run between the tackles for tough yardage make his bones as a receiving back he is a matchup problem but so is Burkhead and Lewis adds more sure of a runner and special teams value.
I know your going to point to Lewis health and you may be correct I could be far off.
But a team that likes to run a spread offense and use their backs more in the passing game.
Green Bay New Orleans Tampa Bay may find value for White in the form of a fourth or even late third round pick.
Again just trying to tap my inner BB and say where do I get more picks from in this deep draft if I'm certain about keeping Grap and Butler or pull of a trade for Sherman.
Thoughts

It would be absurd to trade White right now. He's just entering the peak of his value in the Kevin Faulk/Danny Woodhead role and you want to move on? I don't see it.

We're trying to win Superbowls. White had a little something to do with us winning the last one, if I recall correctly. His combination of speed, hands, and elusiveness is a great one for a catch-and-run back and Belichick was able to give him a big role in carving up a very good Atlanta defense. He's still cheap as well. That's not a guy you get rid of quickly. If he starts to get expensive then you ask the question, right now, he needs to be and remain a Patriot.

if Burkhead is in direct competition with any existing RB on the roster, it's Deion Lewis.

I agree with you about Lewis needing to look over his shoulder, but I'm not getting the idea of replacing a slot CB with the top outside corner free agent on the market this year. If they wanted Ryan, they could've had him at a much lesser cost.

Blount deleted it but nothing is really lost online:

Blount to the Giants?
Blount put post up with Beckham saying that they couldnt be tighter if they were blood.
They are saying he could eventually sign with the Giants.
Would hate to see him go there.
Unless Peterson or Charles comes here.
Or we draft a starting back.
Anyway interesting nonetheless.

Can someone translale this into english?

Those fine young lads are going to give it their best, despite what team they are playing for this year.
