QB Performance - Coaching Matters

I think if Jones keeps running the way he was running instead of turning it inside, he gets the first down or is at least close. Bad decision by Jones.

Maybe though doubtful, but did you see the size of the hole left open for Rham on that outside zone blocking play? He'd probably still be running. That's not on Mac since he ran what was called. Dumb call.

We run the most predictable offence in the league.

"Last week, this team was under center for 23 snaps. Twenty two of those 23 snaps were runs," Orlovsky explained. "They were in the gun for 34 regular snaps [excluding the two-minute drill and from inside the five-yard line] and threw the ball 31 times out of those 34 snaps."

So when the Patriots had Mac Jones line up under center, they ran the ball every time but once. When the Patriots had Mac Jones in shotgun, they threw the ball all but three times.

Evan Lazar said on Catch-22 and Patriots unfiltered a few weeks back than since 2021 Mac was one of the worst under center passer in the NFL. The reason they are not using him that way is because he sucks doing it.

He was a rookie last year, a 2nd year player this year. Isn't coaching supposed to help make him better, and not harder for him? We ran it 22/23 x under center. We run the same plays over and over. They said multiple D's were calling out our plays before the snap this year. How is Mac supposed to flourish and grow with these clowns running the show. Why no play action when the D is obviously expecting a run? Why not make it hard on the D and keep them guessing?

Why don’t these numbers match the play-by-play? Excluding the goal line and the two-minute like he says, here are 7 runs from the shotgun, not 3.

1st & 10 at LV 29 (15:00 - 2nd) (Shotgun) R.Stevenson right guard to LV 23 for 6 yards (L.Masterson; N.Hobbs).

1st & 10 at LV 19 (13:30 - 2nd) (Shotgun) P.Strong right guard to LV 17 for 2 yards (M.Crosby).

1st & 10 at NE 47 (13:39 - 3rd) (No Huddle, Shotgun) R.Stevenson up the middle to LV 49 for 4 yards (D.Perryman).

1st & 10 at NE 28 (7:14 - 3rd) (Shotgun) R.Stevenson left guard to NE 35 for 7 yards (L.Masterson).

2nd & 10 at NE 39 (5:57 - 3rd) (Shotgun) K.Harris up the middle to 50 for 11 yards (L.Masterson, T.Moehrig).

2nd & 5 at LV 45 (4:53 - 3rd) (Shotgun) P.Strong left tackle to LV 40 for 5 yards (M.Butler; D.Perryman).

3rd & 14 at LV 33 (2:07 - 3rd) (Shotgun) R.Stevenson right guard to LV 29 for 4 yards (D.Perryman).

People are talking about how Josh Allen improved in his second year, but that is ignoring the fact he had Brian Daboll both his rookie year and second year. Daboll was able to hold Allen's hand and develop him.

There is an overwhelming number of first round QB busts who had a revolving door of OCs and systems in their first few years. In fact off the top of my head, I cannot think of a single successful QB who had a different OC and offense his second year in the league. I am sure there are some, but I cannot think of who. Most are busts.

Herbert.

You are right. I forgot about him, but he had a historic rookie season. He broke the rookie TD record. I mean usually even Hall of Famers do not have great rookie season like that.

I am not sure you can find many more who had a different coordinator and offense in his second year and succeeded.

SMH at internet forum tough guys who want a 24 year old to turn in to a heroic leader and rise above stunning dysfunction and disconnection in the coaching staff and deliver greatness. Brady at 24 would have sucked under this leadership, too. Like 'Merica always does, avoid the systemic, complicated, difficult work to be done and lay the problem at the feet of individuals.
Agree with all you said…up to the ‘Merica part.

His coordinator in his 2nd year was worse and continues to be one of the worse OCs in the league. Herbert has played well despite this.

Which coach taught Mac not to throw to a wide open receiver and instead throw it to the flat in front of 2 defenders? Was that Patricia in his ear during the play? Enough with these excuses.

He may have questioned the arm strength necessary to get the ball there before the FS broke on it. Just throwing that out there. If it’s a moon ball, it’s getting picked.

He never looks that way. Common theme of this season.

Herbert seems to be the exception to the rule. And he might be in competition for the best QB in the league with a better coaching staff.

1st QB in NFL history to have the first three 4,000+ yd seasons. If he stays healthy, he could go after Brady's stat records. Imagine what that kid could do with a top notch coordinator.

Are you talking about Joe Lombardi? There is no universe where he’s worse than what Mac Jones has had to deal with. It’s not close.

He was making sure he stayed in bounds to not stop the clock
