ProFootballWeekly.com - Georgia Tech's Thomas climbs up draft boards

Let's for the fun of it assume this is how the first round will fall. We take Bryant and I'm Ok with that as long as BB has checked him out. Now Hughes, Graham,Odrick, Kindle, and Alualu are off the board. Who do we target in the 2nd round?

I say we go after Misi.

Can you breakdown why you like him so much?

Yes, yes I can.

First he is a football player not an athletic freak in football uniform. He has the size , speed and strength. He has good arm length and good sized hands needed for an OLB in the Patriots 3-4. He is very coachable and is a leader who loves football and is dedicated to the game.

Now he needs to learn how to defend against the run better and develop better pass rush moves when playing on his feet. But I think he's a good fit for the Patriots and a low risk draft choice.

I suppose you take Misi, but I'm not in love with the pick. At 22 with Kindle and Hughes both off the board, I think I have to take Graham, even with Bryant still available. I then try to trade back up into the 1st round to grab Bryant if I believe I can handle him.

Maybe in the 2nd I take Daniel Te’o-Nesheim instead of Misi. Depends how effective you think Misi can be as a pass-rusher.

Alternatively: don't take a pass-rusher. Instead, take the best 3-4 DE you can (Tyson Alualu, Alex Carrington, Corey Wooton) and re-sign Derrick Burgess. Use your other draft picks at ILB and RB. No point reaching for players.

I am also a Misi fan and he would not be a reach in the 2nd round. I am also a fan of Nesheim, but think he could be had in the 3rd round.

I am looking defense for that first pick, if all those guys and Odrick are gone, I trade back. If they did take offense at 22, I would be content with Carrington and Misi in the second, and if they could pick up a third, take Nesheim there.

A D would be cut or traded and forget about Burgess.
I would rather take my lumps with a couple hungry kids than watch these FA 'veterans' play like crap AGAIN, with noone in the pipeline. I think Ninkovitch has more to give to this team than Burgess and AD.

SO why would BB change his veteran retread strategy after 10 plus years of having used veterans almost exclusively?

Does he have enough sand in his pants to set the edge against an OT like Ferguson or Long? Can he stack, set and shed a pulling Alan Faneca?

I personally can not see it.

100% Agree. We need a pass rush first and foremost now and especially in the future. There are many needs for this team (WR, RB, OLB) but getting to the QB has to be #1.

Because it hasn't been working for the last 4 years and they haven't signed any free agents to do it this off-season.

He is the same size as Kindle, can HE do it. I would take Misi at 47 over Kindle at 22 every time.

From what I have seen JPP, Dunlap and Griffen can't do it either, but none of them are even on MY board.
Sorry but the next Willie isn't walking through the door anytime soon. None of the prospects are perfect, it's time to take a couple coachable ones that do most of the things you want and teach them how to do the rest.

There are too many HC clones and systems to pick and choose selectively and successfully. It's time to make adjustments like you would at half time.

I do not think Kindle, Morgan or Hughes can set the edge either. I think Graham is the best run defender out of all those that are being considered at OLB, but I have huge reservations with his size and short arms.

I think Dunlap could set a mean edge and hold up very well at the POA.

This guys scares me. With all of the WR's that have come to the Pats who had trouble understanding the playbook (to many to name), do we realy want a WR that has been described as "Immature, Unreliable, lapses in focus and concentration, Intellegence may be an issue, may need to have playbook scaled down". No thanks. Ill pass.

When? Every other play? I can forgive the OUI, kids do stupid things.

But the guy has a major motor issue. Weight can be gained, strength can be developed, you can't develop Heart and Desire. You either have it or you don't. This guy doesn't.

If he had it, he would be challenging Morgan to be the first DE off the board, not steadily dropping out of the 1st round.

And I still don't understand the fascination of trying to force true 4-3 DEs into OLBs. I don't see 6'6 275lb DEs playing OLB.

I disagree on this point. Kindle was more productive in college, I'm not convinced about how he plays in space (he looks a little stiff to me) but I think he can get it done. Misi is more of a project than Kindle, for me.

And perhaps this is because Ninkovich learned so much by playing behind these two strong veterans last year. You do know that Ninkovich couldn't beat either of these guys out for reps last year. I suppose he would have more to offer than these two, if both are gone.

Willie did just fine at OLB at 6'5" and 270 pounds.

The bottom line is the kid did his job on the field for Florida and did it amazingly well. In our defense he sets the edge on running plays and contains that entire size of the formation. On pass plays, we cut him lose from a two point stance and opposing QB's will not have all day to pass against a young and shaky secondary.

When Dunlap feels like playing, that is. And that's the problem - the inconsistency and the lack of motor. Too often he's the third/fourth one to the play, and not the first. Which stops him from being a true playmaker.
