I'm not big on trying to play the game of figuring out the final 53 man roster. I'll leave that to others who are better at it. I'd like to take a broader look at the roster as TC ends and we gear up to the regular season and try and figure out what the needs we are looking at and if we have a realistic chance of finding answers to those needs through possible trades (realistic only) and the waiver wire.

I'll start with one and open it up to the rest of you.

#3 QB. Now this isn't a big need, but we need to address it and it will most likely happen at the PS level. You HAVE to have at least 3 arms on the team at all times to run practices and help with the scout teams. That's a given. Woolridge and his seeming inability to get the ball over the LOS with any consistency has played himself off the PS imo and we need to add a young developmental prospect to the mix. Any nominations?

I know there are many that would like to add Dobbs to that list and swap him out for one of the Giants back ups not named Dart, but while I might agree, I'm afraid that ship might have sailed at this late date. I think one of Dobbs problems is his attempts to learn Josh's complex and timing dependent offense. We might just be better off hoping that Dobbs continuing to take reps and getting familiar with the receivers we will see an improvement when or if we next see him play. It would be a lot to ask a new guy to come in and learn the offense on the fly while still being one play away from the field. Better the devil you know ... BUT we definitely need to upgrade #3.

Now what about LG?

The #3 QB situation will be addressed at the 53 man level. The emergency QB requires the #3 QB be on the 53 man roster. Besides, I suspect the #3 QB will be a waiver claim of the best 4th stringer another team tries to to sneak through back to their PS or by trade. Both would require a place on the 53 man roster for the QB.

A spot on our practice squad might not be seen as a better option for a QB who clears waivers than a spot on the PS of the team they were with though the offseason and training camp.

Now what about LG?
What you see is what you get at LG, unless we sign a free agent.

No one will cut or trade an NFL quality LG.

Four players that are left have had significant reps at LG in camp: Wilson, Strange, Brown and Wallace.

We don't know who we will be able to count on as a starter or backup. I would keep them all as part of the 10 OL's on the 53.

Most of the best QBs cut will be vets that aren’t subject to waivers. And as you point out, a waiver claim of anyone will not be for PS it will be for a spot on the 53 man roster.

That’s why a trade seems to be the best solution. And QB3 is likely on the roster, unless Dobbs is cut and we have a new QB2 plus a new QB3 on the PS.

Other alternative is Dobbs stays and a QB3 is signed to the PS. Anyway, having QB3 on PS not 53 man roster means no emergency QB, and activation of QB3 uses an PS elevation. That seems like putting all the QB eggs in Maye’s basket and conceding that if he’s injured we got nothing.

kenny pickett (trade)
hendon hooker
jameis winston (trade)
adrian martinez (jets)

I favor trading a 5th or 6th for pickett or winston

I think this roster especially if a few trades happen can easily carry 3 QBs on the 53. And they should absolutely look to do it. Dobbs may be a back up who is capable of pretty good days along with bad, but if he can't reliably protect our players if called upon then he is a bad investment.

It was something I didn't consider enough till it was really brought to my attention, but just as important, if not more so than a back up QB able to stop the bleeding, is not making it worse by getting another starter injured with a hospital ball. This is something Dobbs has a history of doing, so we need to get something in who can't only potentially win games but keep our guys as safe as can reasonably be expected while doing it. Back up QB needs to be a priority that is addressed by next year so we can move on from Dobbs.

Pickett is rehabbing a hamstring injury... pass

Winston is an int machine... pass

The other two? Might as well bring back woolridge as a developmental qb...

What about Tyler hunt ??

For the sake of argument, perhaps we should look for some HC who is clearly on the hot seat this year, and is prioritizing saving his skin this year as opposed to development of future talent. If it is a team that is floundering around, all the better.

Most of the teams with great offensive lines don't have coaches on the hot seat (probably not a coincidence). Possible teams with hot seat coaches with at least decent offensive lines might be the Cardinals, or maybe the Falcons, but I didn't see anyone obvious to poach (either via the WW or us sending a 6th or 7th round draft pick).

Although their OL is pretty bad, how about the NYG? They definitely have a win-now hot seat coach. As far as a candidate to poach, Evan Neal was absolutely awesome at Alabama, but for some reason (evidently partially injury related) he hasn't worked out at OT in New York and they are moving him to guard. I know we have a similar story on the Pats, but Neal has a much more impressive college career and draft pedigree (7th overall pick). Would the NYG send him to the Pats for a 6th or 7th round pick?

I don't really know what his problems have been with the Giants, all I know it that he was awesome at Alabama, and as far as his athleticism (at least in college), there is this:

Of course I'l rather have DeVito as our #2 than Dobbs. And, being in Daboll's (JMD lite) program, I'm sure there's enough of a base to jump right in. But he'd have to get cut outright, and then, he'll go through waivers where it seems quite likely after his preseason performance, he'd get picked up to be someone's backup. I wouldn't be surprised to see Giants cut Winston, and keep 3 QB's based on the idea that Wilson might suck and they'd want to give him the Carr treatment during the season if the future gets handed to Dart.

Ryan's working the phones. Eliot is busy doing something else. All is going according to plan.

If strange survives cut down day he will likely be the backup LG. Wilson is the starting LG for sure.

As mentioned, the only teams ahead of the Patriots in waiver claim priority are the Titans, Browns, and Giants. Browns have 4 QBs they may be keeping themselves, and the Giants can’t place a waiver claim on a guy they cut. So that leaves DeVito only needing to get by the Titans; otherwise the Pats will get him if they place a claim.

Well, that is the good news, the three teams ahead of the Pats in waiver claims may not have a big need for DeVito.

The not-so-good news is that the Pat's (arguably) biggest need is OL (especially IOL). For one 2025 OL Ranking Website (see the link below the paragraph) the OL rankings for the Titans, Browns and Giants is 24th, 27th and 28th (out of 32, with the Pats being ranked 29th). Whether or not you agree with these exact OL rankings, it is pretty clear that the Titans, Browns and Giants have weak OLs and important OL needs. Thus, unfortunately any promising OL prospect that has been released on waivers is likely to be snapped up before the Pats can make a claim

Getting coffee. Doing media. Eventually enough public hints will drop for people to believe me on this lol.

My initial wishlist for the PS is Adrien Martinez, Logan Brown, Jon Jiles and Jeremiah Webb so far.
