POLL: Would Bill O'Brien make a great head coach to run the Pats after Belichick leaves?

First off, I hope BB doesn't retire for at least another five years, making talk on this subject premature.

If BB were to retire at the end of the year, I don't think Bill O'Brian is the best candidate to replace him. Then again, who could replace him? Whoever the next HC of the Patriots is, they will living in the shadow of a legend and I doubt any of us fans will be as happy as we are now. I feel bad for whoever that ends up being... the only way to win in that scenario is to be as good as BB or at least close. Good luck!

Caserio was extended through 2020 making more money than any GM in the league. When BB is gone, Caserio will be running the show. The next head coach will report to Caserio.

IMHO the ideal situation would be Caserio as GM and McDaniels as coach. Both are extremely close friends, they played on the same team at John Carroll (Caserio was QB, McDaniels receiver). I think I remember reading somewhere that McDaniel recommended Caserio for the Patriots, but I can't find the article now. They know how to work together successfully and both have been tutored by BB. I think they would be the ideal team. Hopefully their friendship would help them avoid the GM-coach conflict that seems to be so common on so many teams (with the Grigson-Pagano Colts conflict being the most egregious current example).

I like McDaniels. I think he learned a valuable lesson in Denver that he needs to be Josh and not little Bill.

At some point, when BB decides to retire (a day that we all hope is in the distant future), he will have to look the Krafts in the eye and tell them whether or not he thinks Josh is the right guy to succeed him, assuming that he is still on the Patriots' staff at the time. If he has decided that Josh isn't, BB will probably either make another suggestion or give the Krafts a list of people he thinks of as possible successors.

Josh McD is first choice as coach in waiting.

If BOB learns and mellows a bit after Houston, as JMcD did after Denver, then perhaps he could be a good choice if Josh isn't available or doesn't want it.

Good point. The question is who BB is more loyal to, the Krafts or Josh. BB has always been very supportive of career advancements for his assistant coaches, with the exception of Mangini (who completely screwed everybody, including himself).

Wasnt impressed by McDaniels in denver, and thought he was rude to BB as a mentor at the time. That and even considering Tebow as a legitimate draft for QB was ridiculous. Some people are good offensive coaches, but not coaching material. Maybe he learned, I dont know.
But he wouldnt be my 1st choice. Doesnt matter BB is going no were.

Yet BB brought him back as OC. That says a lot to me.

It's rare having a GOAT coach, and a team is lucking getting a GOAT quarterback. But when you get both at the same time?.....well, that happens only once ever!

That said, Garoppolo and McDaniels seem to have a solid relationship. And assuming they stick together, I think they'll do their best to live up to Brady's and Belichick's standards. Jonathan will be sure of that

I think the reason they cant win is because the Texans picked Clowney who is an injury bust instead of picking a QB.

In truth, who knows? All I know is I have no expectations that the replacement will be as good. I think the franchise is going to be a contender still...that's just where this franchise now, but...I'm enjoying this ride now, while it lasts.

The problem with every BB disciple that has ever gone on to be a HC is the same. They all try and run a team like BB does but they haven't earned the respect he commands. A large part of the but in BB gets is because he is successful.

They could have still had Clowney and got a QB. Seattle practically gave away the 32nd pick when Pats got Easley. Texans need a future QB and '14 was a deep QB class and they were position to get either Bridgewater or Carr and they took a guard Just a terrible job by O'Brien and Smith on the QB position the last two years.

Only thing I can think of why O'Brien has decided with to go with journeymen and career backups his two years and not draft Bridgewater or Carr when he had the chance is that he has McNair sold on Hackenberg.

Bridgewater is pretty awful too. Carr, yeah, that would have been a good pick. But then, a lot of teams missed on him. Supposedly they we're going to take Jimmy G. Who I expect will end up the best QB of the bunch. IIRC, they we're picking right after us in the 2d round.

Considering what he walked into at Penn State, I'd have to say he did pretty well there.
