I never underestimate fan favorites of other teams. They’ve done something to earn that praise where fans can relate to that player. We’ve had plenty of them in all major sports.

Dov is exaggerating, but these are a few names who were overrated by Pats fans:

Trey Flowers past player.

Onwenu and Kyle Dugger are the latest.

Yes a fans form of locker room ****ocracy.

Yeah... Hmmm...

When talking about our team, players get "over" rated simply by being better than the guys they replace... Onwenu was just mentioned... What did he do besides step into an ailing line rotation and solidify things... If that's over rated, sign me up...

Second is rooting for home grown players that have demonstrated growth in their game, usually over the first three years... Again, the previously mentioned Trey Flowers... Was he worth the 90m Matty p gave him to come to Detroit? No... But when he was here he did one hell of a job on the line... Over rated in New England? Hardly... Over paid by Detroit? Yes

Lastly, I don't pay enough attention to the binkies on other teams to really know who is over rated by their respective fan bases... Just don't care enough anymore to actively read other teams message board sites to figure it out...

And just remember, our best player ever was "over rated" in the first three or four years of his career by everyone but the fans in New England, according to fans across the league... Kept trying to bury him with the prolific stats generated by the human forehead that kept mysteriously growing *cough* hgh *cough*... Collecting rings vs collecting stats as it were... Wasn't until '07 that he started to get his "due"...

And lastly, eff off reek... WW was awesome... Reek might have more yards, but Wes never broke his kids arm ...

Good player, was able to apply the pressure while with the Patriots. Never was able to get the gaudy sack numbers but was a very solid addition to the roster. Would of loved another set of players beside him like Barmore and Judon where he’d flush and they’d finish.

Every backup quarterback on a mediocre to bad team has been overrated by their fans throughout the history of the NFL.

We have seen it happen here going back to Matt Cavanaugh to Michael Bishop to Bailey Zappe.

Last year we saw it happen elsewhere with Tommy DeVito and Joshua Dobbs and Mason Rudolph.

Every Jet starting QB since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon has been overhyped by their fan base.

There are also annual overractions to a couple of good plays by undrafted rookie free agents in training camp or preseason games.
Zach Sudfeld and Markell Carter are a couple of names from a few years back that come to mind.

This was what I was going to say. The backup quarterback with any sort of story or ounce of personality is always a fan favorite. Even more if the starter isn't good or gets hurt and the backup quarterback has a good game or handful of plays.

Before he entered free agency in 2019, Evan Lazar pointed out that Flowers had the most unblocked "pressures" in the NFL in 2018, yet could only muster 7.5 sacks. That's actually really bad. He was basically saying Flowers was schemed up by Bill to be put in that position rather than his natural talent being able to "pressure" the QB.

Matt Cassel. Thanks to the “Trade Brady” thread. lol

Allow me some poetic license to modify the above statement.

Every backup quarterback from a mediocre to bad team who gets signed by a QB desperate bad or mediocre new team has been wildly overrated by their semi-delusional fans throughout the history of the NFL

For example: Jacoby Brissett....or as often referred to by said semi-delusional fans: a big UPGRADE over Mac

I don’t what to say to that? The fact he was 2nd in the NCAA in his final year in QB pressures seems to be a pattern on what he did while with the Patriots. Obviously he wasn’t all pro but any level headed fan could see he was a good fit in our system. If they had a skill set like that combined with Judon and Barmore that would be a perfect piece. Overrated? Maybe? But it depends on if fans were thinking he was some kind of TJ Watt or if they saw him as similar as I did. A good player.

Seventy-five percent of first round QB draft picks are overrated. Half of those are vastly overrated.
