I think this will be the toughest game of the year. I also think this game will tell us a lot about what we have in the 2018 Patriots. Do we have a Super Bowl contender ? Or is this the 2005 Patriots ?

How does an opponent benefit when the Pats do well? That doesn't make sense.

It seems to me that rooting for an opposing player to do well goes against being a fan of a team. I wouldn't want to be put in that situation, especially in a close game.

This discussion reminds me of the time in 2001 when I ran a $5 per square SB pool at work. I asked one of my co-workers which he would root for if the Pats needed a score to win the game but it would take away his winning square. His response was that the Pats could win another SB. To me it was worth losing the $125 to see the Pats win.

Okay, so for example if my opponent for that week has Brady as his QB then he benefits from Brady having a great day. I may well have Gronk, then I benefit too but only when Gronk catches a pass.

But because you have 10 players, almost every game will have some sort of rooting conflict of interest. I can honestly say that I have never ever rooted for something bad to happen to the Pats in order to win my fantasy match. Not that it matters one way or the other. Given your friends' choice, I would say he has only demonstrated that he wasn't really a true Pats fan, there's no way I would take $125 over the Pats winning a Super Bowl.

But it raises an interesting question - how much would it take for you to switch your allegiance? I'm thinking at least 10K, and if I were financially better off then we'd start adding zeroes to it. What would be your price?

What a great question. I'm not sure exactly how much it would take for me to root against the Pats but it's probably less now that they won 5 titles, and could get back to another, than it would have been back in 2001 when we weren't sure they'd ever get another chance. And it would certainly be well north of $125.

Betting against the Patriots in which one strives for a financial outcome should be completely separate from any emotional attachment.
