Pioli: How valuable is he?

He's very valuable to this team. How anyone can say otherwise is beyond me. I find it hilarious, yet insulting to the man, that some people are in here trying to sweep his accomplishments under the table. "Well he's been hit and miss at best". What? One could argue that, without Pioli's brilliance in the draft room, the Patriots could be without one of their Super Bowl titles from 01-04.

That said, if he must leave then so long, Scott, and thanks for everything. This is the NFL, boys. I've said this in every thread about Pioli leaving: people come and people go. I'd love to see him stay but if he doesn't, I think Kraft loves this team too much to promote someone who is inept to take over his position.

Just take a look at the posters who say such things and remember these posts every time they give their opinions in the future. They expect perfection, which makes their two cents not worth two cents.

I don't think there's any overstating the value he's had to the team. That said, losing him wouldn't be nearly the blow losing BB would be. You almost wish it would have happened last year when we could have handed the job to Dimitroff, who's clearly doing quite well in Atlanta. That said, I expect they have a successor groomed and ready.

My gut feeling is we could manage to continue winning with the loss of both Scott and Bill so long as Ernie Adams continues to call the shots.

I believe he is the *real* reason for the success of this organization.

Actually, as I read through the posts, outside of perhaps a few, most everyone (myself included) absolutely knows that Pioli is very valuable to the organization. I certainly don't want him to leave and I don't think anyone would (which would be stupid).

In the same breath. It is a loss I think we can recover from though because, like you, I understand and trust that Kraft will not just bring in any ole Joe to replace him. Unless your talking about a few posters as opposed to the tone of the thread, I would disagree that most undervalue Pioli's role at all.

Indeed. That's why I put "some posters" into my post.

Why do we have to question any person who may leave the pats or is injured etc. ? Cant we accept he has been very good for us ? Some (in a minority of course)did the same when cassel came on and thought is brady better ? Some still question how good was vinateri . Its a business and stuff happens. Lets give the guy his due without caveats of blown draft picks. He deserves at least IMO. For every donald hayes and chad jackson and bethel johnson we have a moss, welker ,branch and gives.

I was just tying to parse between the realistic evaluation going on in this threa (which can be viewed as critical or "cheapening" Pioli's value I suppose) and the irrational posters who obviously don't have a clue of his value and don't care if he goes.

For the same reason we "piss and moan" when players make bonehead plays in a game, despite the fact that we value them as members of the team. 1 doesn't equal 2 here and the two don't always correlate.

Nobody has more man-love for Moss that I do, but damn if I didn't MF him just a bit on all those bonehead drops he had this year .

It's just one of the dopey things fans do.

Neither Milloy nor Bledsoe was selected by Pioli/BB, and Branch has been fine for the Seahawks when healthy.

He wasn't saying they were drafted during the Belichick era.

I think what we are seeing playing itself out year after year is that BB is the engine that drives this car. Everyone else is replaceable. Yeah, you have to give credit to Pioli/BB for drafting diamonds like Brady and Cassel late round. However, reality is, if Pioli/BB thought they would do half of what they did, they would have gotten them several rounds higher than they did. Could be luck, or BB's system...You think Colvin walks off the street for any other team and holds his own? Or Cassel steps into a starting role with no experience since high school and does well? Or a team gets decimated by injuries and still goes 11-5 with backups? My money is on the Kraft/BB and Ernie Adams express.

Frankly, my feeling is that if Pioli leaves its because Bill is TOO involved, and Pioli wants more power.

We've spent three #1's for our defensive line.

The question is where Pioli and Belichick find value in players that they believe will contribute. I see no problem in drafting another first round safety. With Meriweather's skill set, we could bring in a player who projects to either a free safety or to a strong safety.

BB spent two #1s for TEs. I see no problem whatsoever drafting a Harrison replacement with the top pick. I say that while being blissfully and completely ignorant of all college football players.

With Tank Williams back and that Missouri kid at #1, BB could have the Elephant Backfield he lusts for.

I am one of them and I disagree with your assessment. I think our drafting outside of the first round has been average at best. I don't expect perfection but I am honest about it. The same goes for FA. Thankfully when we hit we tend to hit big with the Bradys and Mosses. But our hit rate in rounds 2-4 and FA is so-so at best IMO.

Is there anyone here who has said they don't care if he goes ? No-one wants to lose him. But there's only two irreplaceable people outside of ownership and that's Belichick and Brady.

Well..in game criticism is fine. But this is like saying if moss had left the pats and signed with someone else at the end of last season ,some of us wouldve criticized him as washed up and not a 'patriot' player etc.

He's already turned down the chance to be the highest paid GM in the league (Seattle), and the chance to interview for what would have been a certain big raise (Giants).

Well then how could the Browns possibly lure him away? I'm not really understanding of the business side of this if someone can explain to me. Why would he leave, a change of scenery, a chance to accomplish something with a different team? And more importantly why would the Pats let him walk when there's no restrictions on what you can pay coaches/managers.

Krafty Needs to open the check book for this guy....period

I'm confident he can be replaced; either by BB as coash/GM or a new man. However it would be a big deal to lose someone with his ability, contacts and relationship with BB. I would also be worried that some of the junior coaching and scouting staff might follow him. A bad choice of replacement would be dangerous and Pioli seems to be one of the few people who can deal with BB as an equal.

As for why he would want to leave, maybe he's sick of being blamed for every bust while BB gets the credit for every success (as some posters here do). Or maybe he'd like to work in a job where people actually know who he is and no-one ever asks 'how valuable is he really?'

Our drafts have ranged from average to above average.
Have made some nice FA pickups, but have also have had some disappointments.
How valuable is Pioli, really?

Is this for real?? Is this another case of not being able to deal with the fact we may lose him so in order to deal with it we are now going to start saying he isnt all that good anyway???

Hes been extremely valuable, third, i would say, to Belichick and Brady.

If Pioli defects to the Browns, I wonder if Belichick might hire

Phil Savage to work in the Pats' personnel department? Phil

worked with Belichick in Cleveland.

To credit or blame Pioli for the Pats draft picks is crazy. He has major input, but it seems to me that BB makes the final call on everything!!! That is why Pioli is looking at these jobs. I think Pioli is a great cap guy and a very hard worker who helps BB gather information to make decisions, but he has not been a GM like George Young who built those old Giant teams.

On drafted players and free agents, Belichick and Pioli have to agree before

the player is selected.
