So far at least I like the way they've been reviewing these and not reversing anything ticky tack. Just last night if they had reversed either of the ones Rivera threw I would have thought this is going to be awful and a long season.

The one thing I haven't seen yet is a challenge to overturn a thrown PI call be that offensive or defensive. Has anybody seen one in one of the games? I think those will be pretty interesting. Troy Brown's mysterious OPI in the 2006 AFCCG or Ellis Hobbs "face guarding" which isn't a penalty from the same game come to mind.

It’s going to get ugly when they challenge uncalled OPI on pick plays.

I am generally OK with allowing the challenge. My worry is the automatic reviews in final 2 minutes. I expected the 2nd challenge last night to go in Panthers favor as there was obvious contact that seemed to impact the play.

Also, what if they see an uncalled illegal contact early in the route - will that affect their judgement on whether there is PI or not (it shouldn’t - but when the games get big and every “ref” has a Twitter account).

Such a ridiculous knee jerk addition to the game. The NFL should’ve just weathered the storm created by the NFCCG no call and left things alone.

Coaches will abuse that rule. All because of one damn mistake. Payton should have been a man and moved on.

Agreed. Lessens excitement too...used to be you’d have a brief moment of yeah! No flags! Now it’ll be no flags...oh, there’s the challenge flag...time for a snack..ok, they upheld the play...that’s cool I guess...

Yes. The rest will be fine and only overturned on the occasional egregious miss by the official. It's the call in the final 2 minutes...

That’s the main thing I hate about all the challenges and automatic reviews. It just takes all the air out of the play. A ridiculous TD catch in the back of the end zone in the final seconds. The fans are going berserk, you’re home jumping up and down and........stop all that excitement. Look at 6 different angles in super slow mo. Listen to the commentators disagree or speculate. Argue with that guy at the bar who just hates your team and is saying it will get overruled out of spite. Wait some more. Watch the referee slowly remove the headphones and jog to make the call.
I don’t know how the league thinks dumping cold water on excitement is a good thing. I would be perfectly fine if they just did away with the reviews all together. It was never meant to be absolutely perfect, just take the good with the bad and be done with it.

My hope is they are only going to overturn the really blatant pass interference calls. They are doing it right so far, and if they keep doing it that way, you aren't going to get coaches wasting their flags on PI calls, unless it is so blatant there is no question.

I'm definitely not a fan of this rule but the Patriots could have also used it against the Colts when Reche was absolutely mauled in the end zone in 2006. No call, and it was one of the most blatant examples of interference that you will ever see.

I wonder if holding receivers is reviewable? Remember against the Broncos 4 years ago when the Patriots were called for holding a receiver within the 1 yard area at the LOS?

Or even better, OPI is now reviewable. Remember again against the Broncos when OPI was called on a rub route, and it was the DE that got blocked. Brady was like, "That was a down lineman, he had his hand on the ground!! How could you call OPI!?!?"

Finally, Gronk against Carolina in the end zone about 5 years ago, the no call that made Brady livid as he followed the refs to the locker room. Gronk was tackled and the ball deemed uncatchable. That play reminded me of the time giant iceballs flowed down the Hudson River after a huge snow storm, and the river overflowed and started slamming into cars in my building's parking lot. When the insurance guy showed up, he started deducting the damage the ice balls had done to my car from the cars total value (yep, all the cars were totaled). "Gronk had no chance of catching the ball BECAUSE he was being tackled!!!"

I’ll never forgive Clete Blakeman for that one. That was the one where Bill grabbed the official as they were running off the field.

The game won’t slow down since the number of challenges and it’s penalty (Timeout) hasn’t changed.

We can’t have more overall challenges than before unless somehow the Timeout has lost it’s value compared to last year. And it hasn’t.

Yep. It’s entertainment. They act like if there’s a bad call in a football game nuclear launch codes will be compromised.

Holding is not reviewable - but if they see it - I could see PI getting called more readily on review

not true..more challengeable calls means games can certainly be longer. Every game does not see every possible challenge.
