Thanks for the article.I know people will point to the Elway comp as evidence that Peyton could be a successful GM, but that undersells the amount of work that Elway put in before he became GM. It didn't just happen, he worked hard to become a strong evaluator of talent, completely independent of his time spent being a QB.
Here's a pretty good article summarizing it: How John Elway made a successful front-office transition.
He was previously the CEO of an Arena league team, he won AFL executive of the year, and acknowledges that this is where he basically learned to work in a football FO, and even then he was still out of his depth and spent his early time with the Broncos acknowledging how little he knew and seeking advice. Somehow I doubt Manning would do the same.
I think some of the suggestions people make for coaches/GM's are often times lazy. People too often think that just because a player was great on the field that's he's going to be great in a coaching/front office role. This is definitely not true.
Some of the all-time great coaches were never great players. Belichick, for example. He never played in the NFL, and basically jumped into low-level coaching when he was in his 20's. Tony La Russa was basically a forgettable utility player that had only a brief stint in MLB. Phil Jackson was a basically a role player. These are some of the most iconic coaches in sports history, and none of them were great players.
You often hear the sentiment that great players don't necessarily make great players, because they were able to thrive off of natural talent. Often times, the truly great coaches are the one that lacked the natural talent, and had to truly focus on studying and refining the mechanical nuances of the game to stand any chance. Obviously having a great work ethic and being naturally talented aren't mutually exclusive, but there's still a lot of merit to the ideas I mentioned in the previous sentences.
I live in the Bay Area so I hear a lot of 49ers news. Now that they're looking for a new coaching staff. I can't help but roll my eyes at some of the suggestions I hear ("let's bring in Steve Young as general manager, Jerry Rice as wide receivers coach...").
