While I know it's not the top priority, it seems to me that they might do well to try to get a year or two extension for Butler.

If he takes a reasonable offer to add a few mil guaranteed, it's going to be MUCH less than he'd get on the open market, will give the Pats more long term cap maneuverability, and perhaps most importantly, has Belichick showing all other guys that if you play well with the right attitude and out perform your contract, you can be rewarded.

And perhaps there's the benefit where if Butler takes less than market value (though again he is NOT on the market I realize) that could in turn foster a similar mindset among the other Big 4

Again, I realize it's unlikely to happen - but Belichick has employed similar psychology in the past

@Miguel - Love reading your articles. I have questions about what you posted:

* Since Aaron Hernandez is back in the news, like to remind that I have blogged about his salary cap implications. Expect that one day that the Patriots will receive a $3.25 million credit on their cap because of Hernandez.

* I went back and look at the Week 1 rosters and discovered that since 2008 the Patriots had a player on Week 1 who was
1.) claimed on waivers
2.) traded for
3.) signed in free agency

so it is very likely that a current player on another team’s roster will be on the Patriots Week 1 roster.

1) Regarding the credit. Shouldn't they have already received this? Or is still pending for some reason?

2) Regarding the Patriots Week 1 rosters discovery.

• Was it one of each?
• Was there a time frame in particular? Like from OTAs through Week 1? Or did it include from when the league year started? I'm just trying to put this in the proper reference to your conclusion that it's likely that at a current player on another team's roster will be on the Patriots by Week 1.

It was one of the other.
