Pats working out TE Kellen Winslow

Thought I read somewhere that the Patriots expressed some interest in Winslow before Tampa traded him to Seattle and that the NE interest cooled when Greg Schiano told BB that Winslow would not be a good "Patriot."

They do a lot of due diligence workouts just to be prepared in case of injuries. Most likely, this fits into that category.

Signing Crumpler back would be better than a washed up Winslow.

Forget 5WR sets. This team's looking for 5TE sets.

Pretty soon we steal 6'-9" power forwards from the NBA for red zone plays.
Belichick adds 10 variations of the alley-oop to NFL playbooks.

I suppose it was just a matter of time.

He's anything but washed up...damn the negativity. Haven't we had enough of that around the Sox this year?

Not sure where you get the idea that a TE isn't a mismatch for a CB. The conventional wisdom about the "new" breed of TE's is that they're too big for a safety to cover, and too fast for a linebacker to cover.

And if they're too big for a safety, they're WAY too big for a CB. If you try to play press, Hernandez is going to run the guy over at the line of scrimmage. If you play off him, you're either asking your CB to solo-tackle Hernandez in space, or break up a pass around a guy who's used to using their strength and frame to box out linebackers.

Yeah, I can see that about AH. I do believe that Gronk and Graham are more along the lines of the new breed of TEs though and I never recall seeing Gronk line up as a wideout. AH is a rare TE like Finley with freaky athletics.

We officially worked out every TE who was starting on a team last year

Just following up on my earlier post, how does one defend against

Gronk
Hernandez
Fells
Schiancoe
Winslow

if they're all on the field at the same time?

Forget this. Cut welker. Pay Graham 9m a year.

Gronk definitely did. If I remember correctly, that's where he was when he got his record-setting (and last) catch of the regular season. It's also how he had the catch in one of the playoff games that was absolutely in, even though they called it out and Belichick didn't challenge. If Gronk is up against anybody under 6' and there's no safety help, it basically turns into a jump ball situation.

Guess I wasn't paying attention. I watch all of the games too.

Oops, just kidding. Play against the Ravens in the playoff game was a wheel route. Same style of catch, just from a different starting spot.

He was lined up outside and beat the CB 1-on-1 against the Bills, though.

It was Hoyer's lone attempt of 2011. Regained the yardage lead for Gronk.

I know we have quick offensive set plays, but 5 tight ends with our abysmal pass protection - yikes!

A short while ago Gresh said that Mary Paoletti of Quick Slants tweeted that Winslow was having a Pats physical.

Contrary to reports yesterday Winslow did pass physical according to Schefter:

Two notes: Eagles released QB Trent Edwards. Free-agent TE Kellen Winslow passed his Patriots physical, per sources.
