Pats reportedly working out Pat White

I am 80% confident this is purely a play to make Miami reach for Pat White if they like him...

It was like two years ago the Pats worked out a player they had no intention of drafting only becuase they knew someone else was interested in them just to paint the picture they would need to go get them...

White makes a lot of sense for the Patriots. I put him in my mock for that reason.

Number one, they don't have a third quarterback, but would rather not have to waste a roster spot on one. If they had a guy like White who could be stuffed on the roster as a receiver, and who could also play quarterback, that would be a big deal for them. Sort of like the old days when you had Tupa as your punter. It's a real bonus, and has a big impact on your special teams because you can keep another pure special teamer on your roster (or alternatively it reduces the risk you're taking when you only carry two quarterbacks).

Number two, they don't have a full-time return specialist. That was supposed to be Slater's job, and Slater didn't cut it. If someone like White can take over returning kicks and punts, then you're sparing Welker and Hobbs dangerous duty, and getting more out of that roster spot.

Number three, just imagine defenses trying to cover White in a Wildcat with Moss and Welker out there. Unless you want to single-cover Moss, you leave White with only one guy to beat. The difference between running the wildcat with Ronnie Brown and Ted Ginn on the outside and running it with Pat White and Randy Moss is that with White, you have a guy with a huge NFL-caliber arm who can definitely get it to Moss over the top. You'd end up not having 7-on-7 inside but 7-on-6, because they'd have to roll an extra safety out there.

Come to think of it, I wonder if they might try it with O'Connell. Why not, right?

I am a strong objector to any play where a healthy Tom Brady is not under center.

That makes more sense than scouting a player you think you'll be playing against - the Pats and others will want to realistically mock the draft to develop a draft operational plan to land the prospect(s) they want. Good recall.

Ah, ok...you originally said:

Don't the Pats typically work out players they expect to be drafted by other teams to get a jump on scouting them?
...
this is more pre-scouting in case the dolphins draft him and utilize him in the wildcat offense.

which didn't make sense to me. Pre-scouting on the 1/32 chance a particular team they face drafts him? But this reasoning I could possibly see:

I read or heard BB saying that sometimes they need to evaluate them to see where other teams feel they will be at to help them slot them on their draft board

I think Pat White is a good value for the Pats from round 3-4. I had him going to us in one of my mocks because of the versatility he offers.

Well he could go as early as Mid 2nd but realistically if we could acquire him for a early 3rd I think it would be great value pick.
Great value how? A third round pick for a gimmick? THere are better receivers out there and he isn't coming in for Brady to run a gimmick play.

Sorry, just don't see the value for a third.

Maybe a fifth or sixth, where it doesn't matter who you get.

I think Pat White would be a successful receiver in the nfl. he has the intelligence, work ethic... It's too bad that he didn't run routes (per his agent I suppose)

Ah, we did cover it. So officially, we worked him out at receiver. Interesting.

Hah threads popping up everywhere about this

Well I figured the workout was meaningless because I thought he was shunning the WR position. Suddenly, it's a horse of a different colour.

No way am I drafting White before the end of round 3. Too much talent in the positional basis of OT,safety and LB to waste a pick on someone who would be situational at best. Don't get me wrong he is talented and could probably find a spot some where on this team. He would make the perfect practice squad QB for the STARTERS to play against. But that's about it. I am an emphatic NO on this kid on day 1.
