Yeah, they should be able to, but there's nothing wrong with them being camp bodies/placeholders for better players.

A 90-man roster just ain't gonna have 90 Pro Bowlers.
With David Andrews, Jake Andrews and Cole Strange they have a good group of potential starting centers.

Brown is a stiff. They could find a better option late in the draft or in UDFA. They'll be a dozen Brown's or better cut from rosters on 53 man roster day.

The goal is get as many good players onto the 90 man roster as possible... not placeholders. Seems like a waste of time and roster spot to me.

My point is this: Vrabel et al. saw enough in both of them (even if we disagree) that they felt it was, at this point in time, worth giving them a non-guaranteed contract for next season.

All I'm saying is that they can be cut with essentially zero consequences if they do find better players, so why get worked up about it?

I echo the camp body sentiment. Maybe one of them improves under better coaching but this doesn't stop us from still getting more.

Andrews is C1 and Strange C2 anyways.
Who's LG? What ever happened to sidy sow??

I don't expect either to make the 53.

However, I don't think that we are "in big trouble" if one of these is our #10 OL.
I saw this move as depth moves. Who knows the full health of Andrews? Brown is a serviceable back up at C.

For now Strange and maybe Vrabel has confidence in that but I think we should be looking for a vet guard too. Then Strange has competition and can also be C2.

LT is obviously the priority but I think another guard and/or center is also a need as much as RT.

They also didn’t get training camp with the Pats so they had to learn on the fly. And I’m not sure they learned much. But now they may get a real shot.

At LG, we have Robinson, Sow, Robinson and Strange if none of the first three work out.

At C, we have Strange, Andrews, Andrews, and Brown

At RT, we have Wallace and Jacobs
========
Please tell why you think that RT is not the highest need of the three. Wallace has shown little; Jacobs is a Practice Squad level player.
=======
Folks have seeing how we might be OK with only two additions. That is possible, but I don't see it unless we are OK with Lowe as the backup LT.
==========
We have the new signed top-level LT and we have Onwenu. We have Strange. We will keep Robinson and Wallace, at least as backups.

New LT, Robinson. Strange, Onwenu, Wallace

With a lot of luck and some great coaching, the above five could be an OK set of starters,
=======
That leaves FIVE additional positions.

How many of these will you count on?
Lowe
Sow
Robinson
Andrews
Brown
Robinson
Jacobs

RT is typically the least important position on the line.

I don't think we can just assume we have enough interior OL if we fix LT and RT. Which seems to be what most think. All three Strange, David Andrews, and even Onwenwu each have questions.

You have a great point there TP. I think Benny brown is a more than serviceable C and had time he played well. He likely could succeed Andrews.. Jacobs is a swing/back up tackle. Coaching will be much better Vrabel isn't allowing for any BS with OL this season.

each one of them, with a rookie QB and very inexperienced OC, had stretches of good play, or injuries.
if healthy, with good coaching and a vet OC, all of them can be part of a very good OL with some added players. if you add Stanley and Simmons to the group listed, that's a potentially top 10 OL in the league if they can stay healthy.

When the if's of life outweigh the big but.

There is nothing in these contracts saying that either play will be on the roster on the 1st day or camp (or tomorrow.) Given that the marginal cost of signing and then cutting a player is nearly nil until at least Draft Day when there might be a roster spot trade-off, keeping someone in the building who knows how to find the water fountain, is a nothingburger of a move. If there is a better player who they want to sign and wants to sign with the Patriots tomorrow, cutting one or both of these players is cost-free.

What I saw those moves as was depth signing moves. Guys that were starting last season out of necessity and could fill a role here going forward. I remember one of Vrabel's first interviews when he came back as HC saying he wanted to have great depth on the roster as well as starting caliber players.

But you’re still bringing them to camp, using a roster spot and in Browns case wasting your time.

yes exactly
zero downside. nice insurance against injury until someone better comes along, if they ever do.

90 players, and your complaint is about a player that played competently for 100% of the snaps for 10 straight games? with zero financial obligation.
hang on to an agenda much when you can't admit you are wrong
you look foolish. again

Competent… aren’t you the guy who was here early/midway last season telling us our offensive line was good? That Okorafor, Lowe, Leverett and Jordan were good players… that they had good PFF grades?

Forgive me if I take your player evaluations and toss them in the garbage. Brown played okay for a game and got tossed around when the opposition improved. He’s a jag.
