Difficult cut was Justin Francis.

QB (2) Brady, Mallett

ST (3) Gostkowski, Mesko, Aiken

-Gronk is probably starting on the PUP but I don't make assumptions like that until they actually happen.
-I want to get Tebow on there somehow, probably important to the team, especially emulating lefty and/or scrambling QBs during practice.
-Grissom makes the team because he's the only backup NT type player on the roster.
-Only 5 LB because Adrian Wilson is pretty much a hybrid S/LB anyway, and Ebner is a better STer in my opinion than the other back of the roster LBs.
-Gregory loses his spot because there are already 4 locks at safety for non-special teams play. If there's a fifth safety, it's gonna be a special teamer.

It's very premature, and injuries will clear things up pretty well on their own, but that's what I've got right now.

This is a very reasonable roster if you put Thompkins on the Practice Squad (we are NOT carrying 12 receivers: 8 WR and 4 TE's). You could add Francis, but I suspect that a ST/LB will be Belichick's choice.

Personally, I think Fells will make the team if he is healthy.

Yeah my thought process when adding receivers was "hopefully Thompkins has a good camp and he sticks" then when it came to defense it was :bricks: run out of roster spots :p

v2.0 will be done after a week or so of camp which will probably change it some.

Niko Koutouvides was my final cut too with the thinking Fletcher could take his ST place.

Version 1.0:
Very conservative, no real surprises - which makes it unrealistic.
- Could have gone one more OL and one less WR.
- Could have gone one more DL and one less LB.
- Not convinced all three of Jenkins/Jones/Edelman make roster.
- Not convinced Fells and Hoomanawanui both make roster.
- Not convinced Gregory makes the roster.
- Not convinced every draft pick makes the roster.

- Placed Gronk on PUP, though there's a good chance that won't happen.

QB (2) Brady, Mallett
RB (4) Ridley, Vereen, Washington, Bolden
WR (7) Amendola, Dobson, Boyce, Slater, Jenkins, Jones, Edelman
TE (4) Ballard, Sudfeld, Fells, Hoomanawanui

CB (5) Talib, Dennard, Arrington, Dowling, Ryan
S (5) McCourty, A Wilson, T Wilson, Harmon, Gregory
ST (3) Gostkowski, Mesko, Aiken

PUP: (1) Gronkowski

Total players: 53

PS: WR Kenbrell Thompkis, TE Brandon Ford, FB Ben Bartholomew, C Matt Stankiewitch, LB Jeff Tarpinian, S Kanorris Davis, DT Joe Vellano, and an OL (Zusevics/Kline/McDonald/Fisher)

OK...then at what point in preseason does Tebow get cut?

I agree with all your comments. I have only a couple of differences.

I would prefer Cunningham to Beauharnais or Kutouvides. I think that we would be fine with only of these two.

I prefer Blount to Bolden.

And yes, you cleverly solved the issue of which TE is the man on the outside looking in.

Here is my own take that I've been thinking about the past few days...

QB (3): Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Tim Tebow
- Brady and Mallett are locks for obvious reasons. As for Tebow, I'm keeping him just because I can't fathom Belichick risky the circus only to release him sometime in camp. He will be a development QB3/Testaverde type leader.

RB (4): Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, Leon Washington
- Ridley and Vereen form a young and dynamic 1-2 punch at Running Back. Ridley's primary backup will come down to Bolden or Blount. I'm giving Bolden the edge because Blount has shown he is faulty as a receiver and poor in pass protection. His running ability is also inconsistent. Washington backs up Vereen and is a key return specialist.

WR (6): Danny Amendola, Michael Jenkins, Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, Matthew Slater
- A position built more on promise than proven production, there are flashbacks to 2006 for some people (though Brady did take that group to the AFCCG...) Amendola, if healthy, should prove to be a solid replacement for Welker in the slot, and potentially an upgrade in some areas. Michael Jenkins will stay for his veteran savvy and as a tutor for the rookies, not to mention he is the largest receiver they have. Edelman is a sparkplug and valuable return specialist, and top candidate to backup Amendola, but he needs to be healthy. The rookies are locks because of draft status, and Slater is a captain and one of the best special teamers in the league.

TE (4): Jake Ballard, Michael Hoomanawanui, Daniel Fells, Zach Sudelf
- Rob Gronkowski starts the year on PUP in this scenario. After being claimed last year, Ballard will step in as his temporary replacement. He's an average tight end and showed some ability in his season with New York. Hoomanawanui flashed at times and Fells was never fully healthy last year and is reportedly good to go. Sudfeld could push for a spot if he continues to show in camp.

OT (3): Nate Solder, Will Svitek, Sebastian Vollmer
- Two monstrous tackles with a capable swingman.

OG (3): Marcus Cannon, Dan Connolly, Logan Mankins
- Cannon provides depth at both Guard and Tackle, freeing up a roster spot elsewhere. Connolly is servicable, and hopefully Mankins will return to form after recovering from injuries last year.

OC (2): Nick McDonald, Ryan Wendell
- A versatile lineman in McDonald and a scrappy and durable starter in Wendell. Lot of upside on the OL as a whole.

DE (5): Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Marcus Benard, Jake Bequette, Michael Buchanan
- Jones, Ninkovich, and Bequette are locks, in my opinion. Bequette didn't play last year, and I don't think he's done anything to be released at this point in his development. Buchanan is a project player that Belichick always seems to keep one or two of on a year. The surprise is Benard, who beats out Cunningham and Francis. Both Cunningham and Francis were heavily inconsistent last year, while Benard has shown to be a valuable pass rusher for the Browns when he was healthy. I think he can break through as a 3rd down specialist.

DT (4): Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly, Marcus Forston, Armond Armstead
- There really isn't anyone else at DT who warrants a spot. This could be an area that a veteran is signed to.

LB (6): Jerod Mayo, Dont'a Hightower, Brandon Spikes, Jamie Collins, Dane Fletcher, Steve Beauharnais
- Arguably the deepest position on the roster, Mayo, Spikes and Hightower form a formidable starting trio. Collins and Fletcher are more athletic and can play the cover LB role, not to mention Collins can be a situational pass rusher. Beauharnais makes it for special teams.

CB (5): Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard, Kyle Arrington, Ras-I Dowling, Logan Ryan
- Talib, Dennard, Arrington make up a better CB trio than this team has had in a few years. Dowling is showing promise in practices, so I consider this his last chance. Ryan is a solid cornerback prospect who will add depth and provide special teams contributions.

FS (2): Devin McCourty, Steve Gregory
- A young star on the rise in McCourty and a veteran presence in Gregory make this a position that should see some improvement.

SS (3): Adrian Wilson, Tavon Wilson, Duron Harmon
- Adrian headlines the position for his ferocious play, bringing back memories of Rodney Harrison. Tavon will definitely learn a lot from him and develop into our SS of the future, while there is no way Belichick takes flack for drafting Harmon and then cuts him.

Specialists (3): Stephen Gostkowski, Zoltan Mesko, Danny Aiken
- Simply the best 3 on the roster.

Gonna go with 3 DT only, but Francis did play some DT in college and can cover it. Ebner winning do to ST and 5 option as safety anyway.
7 WR because Slater is ST and I doubt we can get Mark Harrison on PS, to much upside. Blount at RB vs Bolden do to size.

  • Tebow will have to show considerable progress during camp if he hopes to make the team. But one has to believe the Patriots knew what they were getting when they signed Tebow, so he'll be given every opportunity to make the team.

  • LeGarrette Blount enters training camp on the fringe of this discussion. He struggled running between the tackles in Tampa Bay, and will need to show improvement in that area to knock Brandon Bolden from the roster. Still, the battle is close and could go either way.

  • Edelman didn't make the cut in the last roster projection, but it is now difficult to see him not making the team. With Aaron Hernandez off the roster, Edelman will likely be part of a group of players who will be leaned on to fill Hernandez's various roles. Seven receivers is a hefty number, and will likely be trimmed down by the end of camp, but this seems a safe bet for now.

  • Svitek and Cannon's versatility cost Markus Zusevics a job.

  • Armstead, a CFL import, will be one of the more interesting players to monitor during camp. Undrafted rookie Cory Grissom is also someone to keep an eye on.

  • The battle between Bequette and Jermaine Cunningham could be a good one if both players show up ready to compete. For now, Bequette gets the nod because of his youth and upside.

  • Depending on how Dennard's July 31 probation hearing for driving under the influence goes, Dowling may end up back in the starting lineup without much resistance.

  • Gregory is a tough cut, but his poor tackling last season makes him expendable as rookie Duron Harmon claims the final roster spot.

A quick bump as this seems to have dropped down a bit :)
