Pats off season thus far?

I'm sure the League of Nations will overturn the unjust ruling.
There may be too many leaders with 19th century mindsets and not enough with 20th century forward thinking.

I'm sure the League of Nations will overturn the unjust ruling.

I don't see how they don't. The sanctions may lead Germany to simply print more money which would devalue their currency and further destabilize the country.

I’m sure my opinion will differ from the lot.

I’m glad our signings are small; “aim small miss small”. The mega signing before Gilmore was AT, and that was a crash and burn. Im glad we don’t try to win the offseason Super Bowl or we wouldn’t be as successful a team if we are allocating chunks of cap percentage to an overpaid underperformer. I think a lot of people forget the simple “we are building a team, not collecting talent”. Viewing our moves in a big picture long run scope, it’s easy to appreciate our “small moves” and not get upset when we aren’t swinging for the fences.

Bill doesn’t have **** to prove. He doesn’t need to win over a fan base or ownership like a new regime would. He can command these unspectacular off seasons and make his moves pay off well into late January each year. No team is ever perfect and it’s foolish to think his calculus of team building isn’t structured to minimalize the failures to keep the system as a whole, successfully operational.

Stagnation, inflation in triple digits will only lead to a national insecurity and resentment towards the rest of Europe and those that have money, real or imagined. This lack of self will likely leave a void of leadership.

Looking at the current roster, there are no GLARING holes..sure there are areas that need some improvement but hopefully getting players off IR and healthy , along with a couple of solid draft picks, will fill areas of concern ( mostly depth)......This time of year always causes heartburn for some fans but when is the last time the Patriots were not considered playoff and/or SB contenders???

Offense

QB- Draft for Future
WR- Solid
RB- Solid
OL - Depth (Scar is a master)
TE - OK

Defense

DL- Solid
LB - Depth
CB - Solid
S - Solid

S/T- Solid

The Good:

RB: Jeremy Hill
- Low risk/high reward. He reminds of a bigger/faster version of Steven Ridley but unlike Ridley, he can be utilized in the passing game. Before people laugh at me, Ridley was a beast his first year as a full time starter until that hit by Bernard Pollard in the AFC Title game wrecked his career. He was never the same after that. Hill revealed that he's been dealing with an ankle injury that he couldn't shake off and decided to get surgery after the Bengals wanted to hand the keys to Joe Mixon. I think Hill bounces back and has a big year with the Pats. On the flip side, I think Gillisle gets released. He doesn't fit the role the Pats envisioned for him. The Pats tried to turn him into LaGarrette Blount and that's just not his game.

WR: Cordarelle Patterson: Led the league in kickoff return yards on average. He also can be a gunner, used on end arounds and occasionally can be used on deep passes to stretch the defense.

CB: Jason McCourty:
It will be cool to watch two brothers play together. He's a good CB and will be a nice #2 to Gillmore.

DT: Danny Shelton: The Pats have been soft in their D-line for some time and hopefully he can help beef up their run D.

The Bad:

DE: Adrian Clayborn:
It's better than nothing but he's not a very good pass rusher. Don't expect him to duplicate what he did last year on the stat sheet. Also, 6 of 9 of his sacks were against the Cowboys missing their starting LT.

Losing Nate Solder: People complained how he was inconsistent but we'll soon find out how much the Pats miss him.

Losing Dion Lewis: I really liked this guy and glad he got paid, he deserved it. Hopefully Hill and Patterson can help fill that void.

What the Pats need to do:

Get a LT
- Maybe Garcia is the guy, doubt it as you don't want to rely on a guy who's essentially in his 1st year. Maybe he's that guy in a year or two.

Get LB's - This is the Pats most glaring need that was exposed in the AFC title game and Super Bowl. They need coverage LB's that can go sideline to sideline. Hightower coming back is not enough.

TE: Need Gronk insurance.

Pass Rusher: What they have is not enough. I wouldn't bank on Rivers doing anything his 1st year but I hope he can surprise. Wise Jr. showed why he was a 4th round pick. After week 3, he hit a massive wall and was invisible the rest of the season.

CB: They need a 3rd CB. Jonathon Jones is pretty overrated among people on this board. Rowe got badly exposed in the Super Bowl and was embarrassing seeing him get his ankles broken on a 3rd down on the first drive of the game by Alshon Jeffery. Then he gets beat deep for a TD by Jeffrey who isn't known to run by too many people. Not to mention, Rowe was graded out as one of the worst CB's in the slot this season.

They need a good LB. This draft has some good ones.

I give bb a solid “B” thus far this offseason.

Still need offensive tackle, cornerback and linebackers,

Curran has an article ranking our signings thus far. I saw it linked on Sports Yahoo.

The article isn't noteworthy. What is noteworthy was the first and only comment in the comments section:

Bravo to Leonard for speaking for the rest of us

As for the article: Curran: Ranking the Patriots imports so far

Stagnation, inflation in triple digits will only lead to a national insecurity and resentment towards the rest of Europe and those that have money, real or imagined. This lack of self will likely leave a void of leadership.
It will only lead to more trouble in the future. Especially if weak leaders elsewhere try appeasement to placate the resentment.

My thoughts on FA so far (following the Flowers re-signing):

Losses: I fully expected to lose Amendola (he took a hair cut the last few years and had a good play-off run), Lewis (was going to get more $$$ than we pay our RB's), and of course Butler (love the guy, but it was time to move on). As for Solder, I was holding my breath....but only mildly surprised.

OL: It is worse than it was in the Superbowl, but we will return 4 of 5 starters. Tobin will replace one of Fleming/Waddle as the swing tackle. We have to pray that Garcia or Croston can make a significant contribution. I'll sleep better if we re-sign Waddle (fingers crossed) and draft another OT...unsure if we should pounce on one in the first 1-2 rounds though.

QB: We are fine here. I don't even want us to take a developmental prospect because personally, I am all in on Brady to the end. If Brady gets knocked out...the season is over as far as I am concerned...will still watch and root for Hoyer....but if someone like Lamar Jackson is available...could be intriguing.

RB: We will miss Lewis' running between the tackles and making tackles miss in the open field. As well as his kick off returns (replaced by Patterson). I love the Hill signing...low risk..high upside. And Gilly...he'll have to EARN it this year to stay on the roster, IMO. Then there's James White and Burkhead...which makes me rest easy. White has done some early down work in the past...we could lean on him if need be. Bolden...one of our ST guys...good re-sign.

TE: Gronk is Gronk. Not so fuzzy on Allen, but he blocks (shrugs). Hollister made some tough catches in limited action and COULD develop into our "move" TE. The Pats reportedly are looking at a lot of TE's in the draft...looks like we will go in that route and draft another TE to keep the pipeline going.

WR: One of the deepest positions on the team...like it a lot. Edelman is returning...we'll see how he does..but he's been working out like mad. Cooks and Hogan are returning...and remember Cooks is playing for his first big contract and Hogan is on the final year of his deal...I like it. Then there's Mitchell who was almost healthy enough to suit up for the Superbowl. Beyond that...Dorsett/Britt/Patterson will battle for the #5 spot. Then there's Slater who re-signed.... Between Cooks/Hogan/Dorsett/Patterson...we have a lot of vertical guys...I like it. I think we still need another slot/middle of the field guy to pair with Edelman...maybe a camp signing like Andrew Hawkins last year or a draft pick.

DL: Brown and Shelton are solid up front. Guy/Valentine/Butler gives us a good rotation. For the ends: There's T.Flowers/Clayborn as the starters, IMO. Then we have Wise and Rivers backing them up...as well as Lee who did some things in limited snaps last year that I liked. We are more deep at DE this year...which should help.

LB: Just getting Hightower back makes a huge difference. Van Noy is the 2nd starter for sure and I thought KVN was playing better before he got dinged up towards the end of the year, IMO. Backing them up...Elandon Roberts, M. Flowers, Langi (who missed the whole year, but looked good before the car accident), and Grisgby. I say we draft a LB to keep the pipeline going....

DB: Gilmore, McCourty/Rowe, J.Jones....that is a solid 3 man group at CB, IMO. And we still might get something...anything from C.Jones. Then for the safeties...we still have our trio of McCourty/Chung/Harmon...which is probably the best safety trio in the league, IMO. We have Ebner and King backing them up...but those guys are ST aces. Then there's Jordan Richards....who has been a bit of a disappointment, but has been playing behind good safeties and unable to earn reps...which might be a good thing anyway.

ST: Gostkowski is a reliable weapon...but I hate his PAT misses... Allen a reliable punter/holder. Cardona is a reliable snapper except for the bad snap in the Superbowl... and beyond that we have probably the best ST units in the entire league with Slater, Patterson, King, Ebner, Bolden, and 4-5 other guys that just play ST's. Field position will be favorable in 2018 by at least 5-6 yards over the 2nd best team, IMO.

Overall grade: A-....we have shored up our depth by making trades, re-signing our own guys, and bringing in mid-level FA's. We still have holes at LT, back up TE, and possibly LB/DE where pass rush is concerned. Losing Solder hurts, but can be overcome, IMO. And we still have cap $$$ left over to extend more guys...our FA class for 2019 is a lengthy list the last time I looked. I don't think we are a worse team...yes, Brady might be under more pressure this year..but the defense should be leaps and bounds better just with the addition of Hightower/Shelton/Clayborn and other guys getting healthy.

I 100% agree with this. You want to know what is more head scratching then trading Jimmy G for only a 2nd round pick? Taking a QB with that 2nd pick. It defeats the purpose of the rumors of going "all in" for Brady.

See my post above. Rowe graded out as the worst slot CB in the NFL last year giving up the most yards per play. This was talked about a lot during Super Bowl week as something the Eagles needed to exploit. And they did. The Pats need one more CB veteran/rookie who could play the slot/outside. Wouldn't be shocked if the Pats draft one in the 1st round to compete with Rowe/Jones. Aaron Colvin would've been a nice pick up. As far as the safeties go, they are good. People complain about McCourty not getting the ESPN highlight plays but he does a good job of keeping plays in front of him and not allowing big plays. But the best group in the NFL are the 49ers safeties. Those young guys can hit and cover a lot of ground.

I am not looking at Rowe as a slot guy, but an outside corner. I thought Rowe played well after giving up the first TD in the Superbowl.

And I felt J.Jones was getting comfortable in the slot before he got dinged. I love Jones' speed.

I consider the Pats safeties the best trio. Last I looked Eric Reid was unsigned though.....

But yeah, draft a CB....you can never have enough DB's these days...
