Pats interested in Derrick Mason?

Didn't he retire last year! That sounds to me like he threw his toys out the pram when he didnt get that new deal

Where is all this Derrick Mason is washed up stuff coming from? He's been incredibly consistent and is showing no signs of slowing down.

3 straight 1,000 yard seasons. I'd love to see Mason signed, but I don't see him leaving Baltimore.

Hes just barely eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark the past 3 season, by like 20 or 30 yards each year. He is 36 years old, he is out of his prime. Not the type of guy the Pats should be after

I see your point, but hes clearly a much better receiver than Sam my hearts Aiken watching you play.

I'll pass on this. The whole Joey Galloway experiment burned me a bit.

He definitely is, but dont you think there are much better WR's available other than Derrick Mason

Mason would be an excellent WR3 option.

Yeah of course there are, Id take Marshall and Boldin over him in a heartbeat even at the expense of a draft pick, but I doubt they go that route even though Welker is out and there is almost nada behind Moss.

You're right, we don't need someone who JUST BARELY topped a measley 1,000 yards. That's not impressive at all, not when we can just start studs like Sam Aiken as our 3rd WR all year.

He's out of his prime because he was a complete stud in his prime. That he's dropped off and is merely very good isn't really a knock against him.

He also moved his family to Tennessee from Maryland last summer too, so could he end up a Titan

Some of the talk on this thread is downright hilarious. Mason can definately still ball. He hasn't lost much burst, is exceptional in his understanding of defenses, and has a skillset that dovetails nicely with Brady. Nevermind the fact that he is one tough SOB and a true leader. In my mind, Mason is one of those guys that make perfect sense and can contribute in many ways. Get him.

Derrick Mason a "complete stud"...I dont even have to read anymore. He was never even close to a stud.

Signing the Derrick Masons of the world is not going to do much for this Patriot team. They need an explosive WR with speed and good hands, preferably someone who is just entering their prime or in their prime, not someone who is closer to retirement

Pats need a lot of things, but it dont mean its going to happen.

ummmmmm...TO
ummmmmm...Brandon Marshall (for 1st Rd'er)
ummmmmm...Nate Burleson

There are plenty of WR's out there, they can definitely address this need this off season with a big name proven player that isnt at the end of their career. WR is actually one of the few positions that actually has many options in FA, there is no excuse for the Pats not to sign a solid WR. Derrick Mason does not fall into that category.

Agreed. Gotta love the Joey Galloway comparisons. Mason is intelligent, tough as nails, a top notch route runner and coming off a 3rd straight 1,000 yard seasons. Galloway was a soft burner coming off an injury plagued, ineffective season who had problems picking up the Pats system. Galloway was pretty much a flier, Mason has proven that he can still play and would be an incredible 3rd receiver. His age just allows us to get a quality player much cheaper than we should be able to.

Really hope this happens but considering he turned down more money from us to go to Baltimore before, I'm skeptical this will be any different than the last time we went after Mason.

BB is all about having a lot of solid jags rather than occasionally spending on the big boy free agents. It used to work cause the roster was stacked with legit talented football players, Willie Mac, Vrabz, Bruschi, Colvin, Harrison, Seymour.... those days are gone. Team needs talent now, and if they approach this free agency period like they usually do in the past then they will like be one and done in the playoffs again, that is if they can hold off emerging teams such as the Jets and Dolphins.

Precisely, some people just don't know that they are talking about and it is annoying how they litter threads with useless posts of made up information. Then again I suppose it's too hard to use Google to lookup anything nowadays.

Right...never even close. He only caught 95 passes for 1303 yards and then 96 passes for 1168 yards in back to back seasons prior to turning down more money from us and signing with the Ravens. Belichick obviously thought Mason was a stud.

Which is why this off season is not the off season to just sign the jags and guys for value. Look at the Jets and their secondary and our WR's. We are no match for them right now. We need to go out and get the big name WR such as a Boldin, Breaston, maybe Marshall or even TO. Also on the defensive side of the ball we cannot be afraid to sign a big game guy. This team has to fill a lot of holes and quickly too, it cannot all come from the draft and the jags from FA

When Mason's wife pulled a Mrs. 75 and chose Baltimore, he was a top three receiver in the league. A stud. A baller. A complete receiver who would have had an obscene contribution to the offense. While he isn't who he was, he is still a damn good football player.
