Pats interested in Derrick Mason?

Right...never even close. He only caught 95 passes for 1303 yards and then 96 passes for 1168 yards in back to back seasons prior to turning down more money from us and signing with the Ravens. Belichick obviously thought Mason was a stud.

You are throwing the definition of "stud" around to easily. Stud would be a pro-bowler almost every season. Mason has only made the pro bowl twice. Yeah back when the Pats made a run at him, he was a lot younger and still in his prime. He is 36 years old, out of his prime. Not our answer.

I guess you guys missed the Ravens game this year when, up until the Pats bracketed him, he was singlehandedly shredding our secondary. Mason was a top-of-the-line WR, and he's still a very good one. I would love it if he came to the Pats, although he briefly retired last offseason, so I had pretty much assumed that he'd be retiring for good.

Mason may be geriatric but he's still better than Nate freakin' Burleson. Are you nuts?

At this point, I'd take Mason over T.O. They're both old, they're comparable in talent, and Mason could actually handle being a WR3 without completely freaking out over not getting the ball enough. There's a reason why the Bills were the only team that even wanted TO last year- he has the brain of a seven year old, the ego of a #1 WR, and the talent of a #3 wR.

From rotoworld:

Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson was told to "keep an eye on" the Patriots as possible interested party in free agent Derrick Mason.
Mason's agent is earning his money Thursday night. Of course, we're only speculating that his agent is behind the reports because the 36-year-old was fully expected to re-sign with the Ravens before Thursday night.

This must be a joke...can't keep signing grandfathers BB....wow

Derek Mason cannot be compared to Joey Galloway.

When Galloway arrived here we all thought that BB would pull another rabbit from his hat and bring back the Galloway of old.

Derek Mason's numbers have not dropped off at all, the guy is still as good as he was 10 years ago. He would do a great job here.

I would have to say that T.O. is a footballer, the guy still has the talent imo. Yes he is a very immature person with ego problems but damn he is one hell of a footballer.

This would be something that would upset me if this would be the only FA signing at WR, the vet old wr does not work..

Rent-A-Player. If only RM and TO could get along on the same team...

The big difference between Galloway and Mason is that Mason is still productive, and Galloway had just come off injury and losing his job in Tampa. There's no comparison other than there both older players.

Mason is exactly the type of wide out we need, good for around 800-1000 yards, good hands, consistant. Can still make the odd big play. Don't get the hate in this topic.

Mason would have been the FA signing of the decade had he come to terms with the Pats in 05... Another Super bowl in 06, would have been a lock..

Mason is #1 on my list. He would be perfect......

I completely agree. There are plenty of WRs available out there that are a lot better than Derrick Mason. There are plenty of WRs out there that are just entering in their primes or are in their primes right now. The whole signing the veterans that are out of their primes just for the low money is not the way to go this off season. Just look at the Jets secondary, they were the best defense in the league and they just got even better. Right now our WRs are no match for their secondary and adding the Derrick Masons of the world isnt going to do much with that. We need to go out and get a big name WR that is either entering his prime or is already in his prime, and if that requires giving up a draft pick, so be it. A big name WR that we know can contribute has a greater value than say a 2nd round pick that we dont know how he will turn out.

Mrs. Derrick Mason ruined it for us!

So you say that Derrick Mason is out of his prime?

Can you give me a list of these Unrestricted Free Agents that had 1000+ yards last season?

Doesnt need to necessarily be addressed through just free agency, trades are possible too and I think that is the route that the Patriots need to go. They cannot be afraid to give up a draft pick in order to get a superior impact player.

The unrestricted FA that I would like the Pats to go after is Antonio Bryant, he is 28 years old, and hasnt really played for a team with a good QB. Browns, 49ers and Bucs, give him Brady as his QB and his production will jump.

NOOOOO!! Anybody who drops a touchdown that costs his team a win, and laughs about it, is not anybody the Pats should want.

If the implication is that he doesn't care about winning enough or isn't competitive enough based on laughing (likely out of shock, considering how good his hands are) over dropping an easy TD that at the time he had no clue whether it would cost them the game or not, that's absurd. This guy is a warrior who has made a career of going over the middle (to the tune of 863 catches) at 5'10 and 190 lbs and taking huge hits and playing through injuries.

I can see how the age would be a concern to some, but Mason's heart should definitely not be. He's one of the toughest WR's in the NFL and would be a great Patriot.

You are making it seem like Mason is like a sure thing for the hall of fame. Your so called toughest WR in the NFL dropped a crucial pass in their game vs the Pats when he heard foot steps coming to him, not something one of the "toughest" WRs in the NFL do.

That was Mark Clayton that dropped a crucial pass because he heard foot steps, not Mason. Mason torched us on the 1st drive and hung on to a TD while getting hit by 2 different guys, IIRC.

You've probably been confusing Clayton and Mason for years based on your scouting report of the guy. It's pretty widely known the guy is tough as nails.
