We've discussed what he's done in detail over and over. Showing up for the biggest week of his life out of shape, leaving the combine early. Not so good Pro Day. This is all signs of mental weakness from an outsiders perspective. At first glance he has bust written all over him. Just because he was highly projected doesn't help me to ignore his issues. He could certainly eat himself out of the league. He was last weighed at 337? Laziness could be an issue?
One of the enigmas of this draft. I can't figure him out from a bystanders view. According to almost every source he was regarded as the number 2 pick in this draft. What he has done to paint the new image of himself just blows me away.
Some will say that he doesn't fit into the Patriots scheme. I could definitely relate to the argument. Some will argue he is much too large and is not in the 295 to 310 mould. He could slim down. My biggest concern would be his ability to trap and pull. He wasn't asked to do it much at Alabama so there is not much of a sample to work with.
I'm not trading any picks to get him. The main reason. Self motivation comes from
within. Bench pressing 225 19 times is a tell tale sign that he doesn't put the extra work in. Don't blame it on his long arms either because William Beatty's arms are very long too and that didn't stop him from putting it up 28 and 31 times. I'll give him credit though he had over 200 knockdowns in the SEC so he must be doing something right.
Dante Scarnecchia seems to have gotten better with age of grooming offensive lineman. He continually drafts with latter picks and turns them into players that can fit our scheme. If he has as much influence as I think he does with his players, Smith could be one helluva player for us. But it would have to be them to get behind Smith as our pick at 23. Honestly Beatty seems like the safer pick without the soap box drama.
