Pats/Giants game, what interests you?

Given the preseason injuries and roster competition, there are several interesting things to watch.

A shame that the Giants are playing on three days rest, but for some players on the roster, that doesn't matter as much. In fact, it may create a more level playing field for those that compete in the first and fourth quarters.

QB - don't care. Hoyer is the clear #2 right now, with a couple years in the system vs. a locked-out rookie. Only injury is really going to derail that.

RB - Shane Vereen. Can he return kicks? If so, opens up a spot not needed for Tate. Also very important to get Vereen some experience blocking and running routes.

TE - Yeatman vs. Smith for the third TE. Yeatman has the advantage, since he's been the primary third TE in 3TE formations.

OL - Can Wendell get on the field? Watching Ohrnberger try to block starters was ugly. Is Wendell going to go on IR? Or are the Patriots going to be scrambling through the waiver wire in a week?

DL - Lot's of competition for the bottom of the roster. They can't possibly keep 11 DL. Are Ellis, Wright, Cunningham locks? Moore, Love, Pryor? Anderson is on the bubble.

LB - Seems to be a five-way competition for the Larry Izzo Memorial ST LB position between White, Brown, Koutovides, Tarpinian, and Lavarius.

CB - If Dowling plays, will he take some plays at S? Can he get any experience at outside corner? Can Butler return kicks?

S - Open competition between Barrett and Ihedigbo for the last spot. Barrett has a huge edge in athleticism; Ihedigbo actually spends time on the field. Neither have contributed much to defense in their careers, although Barrett was drafted as a defender, not ST. Another area the Pats might be looking at cuts.

ST - Any bobbled long snaps? Will they need to pick up a rookie LS for practice squad? Big games are lost on this.

Did your Dad point at the Bills and say something like, "See that big man with the smushed-in nose? That's Fred Smerlas who will one day be a big fat homer for the Patriots. He'll have his head so far up Bill Bellichick's butt on the Big Show you won't be able to see his shoulders. And over there, see #32 son? One day he'll rush for over 2,000 yards in a season and hack his wife and her waiter to death. Isn't this fun?"

Why would my father say that at a game
In 1975?????

Smerlas did not get drafted into the NFL
Until 1979.

Nothing really, it was obvious last week that the Pats don't care about preseason so why should we.

I really don't understand this attitude.

Actually I do understand it, it's a reasonable position to have. I just don't understand why you're on a football fan forum in August if it's the position you take. It's preseason. This is what it is. Some of us like it. If you don't like preseason, feel free to come back in a few weeks.

So you're not just a fair weather fan, you're one of those guys who'd rather be right than see his team win. Good to know.

Aren't you also the guy who said Mayo's career was probably "done" because the Pats rushed him back from injury? How's that working out for you?

No, that's all wrong. I'd like to see the team win. I get emotionally invested and if they start winning that becomes moreso. Then if they lose at the end, I'm crushed (see Denver loss, Indy loss, Giants loss, Ravens loss, Jets loss - 5 playoff years in a row). If they lose at the beginning and struggle and aren't even going to make the playoffs, I make peace with it and move on to doing something more productive than watching a losing team play on Sunday. Like in the Godfather "I made my bones while you were dating cheerleaders!", I've been rooting for the Pats (belovedly called the Patsies) since the early 1970s. You could hear the roar from the stadium in some parts of my town so I've put in my time with a losing team...I'm gainfully and busily employed now so I have other competing interests.

I was responding to "Jack Bauer's" saying that he wanted the Giants to win 54-0, so that I wouldn't post for a while....actually it wouldn't be until they lose a bunch of games in the regular season that my posting would cease. But if they did, not that I would want them to, I would mock said "jack bauer" in turn.

I don't remember saying that about Mayo, if I did, then you must have an amazing memory because I don't remember it.

I want to see Josh Barrett play at Safety. Hopefully he plays. This guy has good size and ran a 4.35 at the combine in 2008.

Josh Barrett: Combine Stats at NFL.com

I've read reports that the Pats like Josh Barrett. I want to see if that's true or not.

I know it's the 4th preseason game but I am interested in watching how the players at the bottom of the roster perform.

Watching a boring game and discussing the Pats are two different things.

This message is hidden because SanAngeloState is on your ignore list.

Well darn....... there's that note again.

You're reading my mind here. Those are exactly the storylines I'll be watching, too.
And at WR, I'll be watching Price for improvement (if he plays),
and Tate v. Slater v. Underwood (v. Farnham?)

Dowling, a better ocho, And I'd love to see A.H. munchin on some QB burgers!opcorn:

Ne too. It's nice, though to have what amounts to an embarrassment of riches these days.

I want to see more looks at Julian Edelman who to me can be like Reggie Wayne taking over for Marvin Harrison after some years as he would take over for Wes Welker in a few years and I want more looks at Niko Koutouvides who is really making his mark and presence felt this pre-season and I'm not talking special teams.

My mistake. Bad inaccurate humor. Interesting that you didn't call me out on OJ's acquittal nor Smerlas being a big fat homer. Isn't this fun?

Enjoy the game.
