Pats extend Ja'Whaun Bentley, two years, $18.75 Million

Bentley and Tavai don’t inspire fear whatsoever among AFC East offenses. Old school downhill thumpers though physically limited.
Bentley has led this team in tackles the last two years in a row... on one of the best defenses in the NFL.
But the Patriots really like them and a D lineman like Godchaux. Probably more than they should.
They pay them well, but nowhere near top of the market, they also get value back in snaps played... these guys play a lot on one of the best defenses in the NFL.
But our front 7 still looks susceptible to the power run game. Like 2002 before we got Ted Washington.
Here is the Pat's rushing defense ranks last season: 6th best in total rushing yards allowed, 4th best in fewest yards per attempt, #1 in the NFL in fewest rushing TD's allowed.

They were arguably the best rushing defense in the NFL, top three at worst. They're bringing back the same exact unit with Keion White, Marte Mapu added, a healthy Barmore and a functional offense. Short of injuries... how are they more susceptible to the run now?
That’s how I’d attack them if I had the OL. Then play action them.

We don’t have that NT other than Carl Davis. Not going to get it done I fear.
They were exceptional last year... they gave up the third fewest points in the entire NFL... they got it done.

I still think he plays too much but Bentley is fine and guessing here his deal with count less then ~5% of the cap. Whatever.
JB has gotten better each season.. since he's been in a defined role. a very vocal leader on D he had been one the teams best players.. ultra physical, he's become a force in the middle and a playmaker.. total patriots type player.

I would think the last two extensions help make a D-Hop deal possible
I don’t think they needed to free up any cap to sign Hopkins.

It's no secret flying from sideline to sideline and twitchy in space movement is not Bentley's game.

In a perfect world Mapu becomes Bob Sanders and if that happens we will win the AFC.
If Mac turns into Peyton

And they had just as many TDs as the barnum and Bailey offense last season..

They’re a good defense that has not proven themselves against the better quarterbacks on their schedule for the last couple years.

Last year against Tua, Lamar, Rodgers, Allen, burrow and cousins

173/240 72% 270 ypg 18/6 td/int 104.5 rating

And the team was 0-7 in those games

Those werent the same years, now I am not sure where the analogy is going
What I'm saying is this can be a Super Bowl contending team with a great defense and an upper 3rd offense. A Bob Sanders like player does that.

You brought up Manning. I brought up the fact if Mahomes (another prolific QB) blows out his ACL, it makes the path easier.

Thats it.

Well I brought up Manning because you brought up Bob Sanders right? If Mapu turns into Bob Sanders then they win the AFC...and I replied, ya if our qb turns into Peyton Manning.

Agree if All of the great quarterbacks in the AFC get hurt, it makes the path easier

Not against better offenses. Just like Mac’s stats.

Creating turnovers getting off the field on third down.

Wozzy, you’re not looking at the bigger picture. All3Phases does.

Just go back and watch the first half of last year’s Bengals game. An elite offense had their way with the Patriots. Good thing, too. Because it almost put the Bengals to sleep in the second half when they had the game in control.

Bob Sanders was amazing. The difference between when he played and when he didn't was night and day -- very few other non-QBs made such a difference. Injuries got him in the end, but he was one of the greats.

That 2006 Colts team was dead last in rush defense during the regular season where Sanders only played 4 games. They averaged 173 yards allowed on the ground, with the next worst team being around 145. In the postseason, where Sanders played every game, they averaged 83 rushing yards allowed. It was an unbelievable turnaround, and it was caused by a smaller safety. It was frustrating to watch at the time, but mega respect to Sanders for having that kind of impact. Dude stopped 90 yards per game by himself.

The Pats had the 25th ranked scoring offense and the 3rd best defense… pretend for a moment football is a complementary sport and you understand it.

Isnt it complementary in the stats you gave as well? So against the better teams its the offenses fault, yet we can praise the defense when they dominate in games?

We can go back to 2021, a year in which they didnt play many great quarterbacks. Vs Brady, Dak, Herbert and Allen

127/201 63%
312 YPG
13/3 TD/INT
101.7 rating
1-4 record

Theyre a really good defense until they play great quarterbacks, its now a trend going on 3 years. How many of them are on the schedule this year?

Hahaha… the Pats defense intercepted Burrow twice and forced a fumble, the Bengals also averaged 3 rushing yards per carry.

Yeah… it was the defense that failed… not our offense that fumbled 4 times, allowed 4 sacks and could only score two TD’s in garbage time.

Tell me you don’t understand football without telling me you don’t understand.
