Pats desperately need a dynamic pass rusher

Well, I posted this in the draft section.

I'm hoping Belichick will not only select a stud DE in the first round next year, but they select at least two more in later rounds.

Because they've to establish a consistent pass rush next season, it's affecting the secondary. Just start over and go young... Franchise Vince Wilfork or use the free money to try to sign one of the FA DEs listed below.

Free Agents

Jarvis Green
Derrick Burgess

Trade Candidates

Adalius Thomas
Tully Banta-Cain

Possible Free Agent (DE) Targets

Ray Edwards
Darryl Tapp
Mark Anderson

Possible Free Agent (NT) Targets

Ryan Pickett

Adalius Thomas a trade candidate? Who would want him and what could we get for him? Maybe a 5th rounder?

Overpaid, but not even close to the most overpaid. As long as Vernon Gholston is collecting huge paychecks, Thomas never has to worry about being the most overpaid

good point. I forgot Gholston even exists because I have not even seen him on the field lol

The pass rush in the 2007 was inconsistent. They racked up a lot of sacks because they had huge leads on teams and forced the other team to constantly throw the ball. A lot of Vrabel's sacks in particular came in garbage time in the late 3rd and 4th quarters.

That said, it is glaringly obvious that BB needs to revamp this teams pass-rush in the off-season. He has shown he is willing to spend the $$ on guys to do it (Colvin, Thomas). Unfortunately he hasn't had the results due to injuries or whatever Thomas' deal has been
Greetings,
Not going to disagree with you on that, but it is much better than what this current bunch is doing. I can't imagine it being any worse. The best way to do it would be the draft instead of shelling out tons of more money on a disappointment from FA.

Sanders is very trade-able too.

Burgess and Green will most likely be goners. Doubt they trade Banta-Cain as he has shown to be a good system fit and they just gave him an extension. They won't be able to trade Thomas most likely, maybe they'd cut him if the league is uncapped. Don't see how Tapp would fit here, he's way too small to play in BB's defense unless they completely switched schemes (or Tapp shifted back to OLB). Mark Anderson is way too light and probably not a good fit either. Doubt the Vikings let Edwards go, and he's not really a good fit for the 3-4 either.

Not sure I'd like Pickett either, if you're going to spend the $$ on a FA you may as well re-sign Wilfork instead of signing an inconsistent, older, less talented version of Wilfork.

Pats need OLBs and a 3-4 DE. The guys you named are all 4-3 guys and I'm not sure the Pats want to have another DE to OLB conversion project

Problem is that OLBs in 34 can often take a while to develop.

Crable shouldve been on his way to starting by now. He obviously didnt pan out. Ninkovich is useless. Banta Cain is decent but wouldnt start on alot of 34 teams. Pierre Woods never showed anything. Thomas is doing TERRIBLE this year.

Why didnt Pats pick up a OLB in the 2nd round this year? Beyond me. And it's coming back to haunt them this year, and probably next year as well since it will take time for a new OLB to develop and learn the defense.

Id rather see some big money thrown at a proven OLB AND draft a OLB. We need one for each side, we have nothing worth mentioning right now.

I agree, we need a pass rusher. But I think the defensive system is the biggest problem. We run a "read and react" system. An OLB has so many reads he has go though before he can rush ahead. Derrick Burgress looks completely lost in that system and I think Julius Peppers or any other DE would look the same. In the league today, the best defenses are defenses that allow their DEs/OLBs shot their gaps and get after the QB. In other words defenses that takes the initiative instead of first reading and then reacting. I think that the Parcells/BB defensive system is outworn.

And It does not help having Dean Pees at DC either…

i agree i think if they got peppers he would not have more then 6 sack's with the pats and i think if AD was back with the ravens or with the jets he would have 8 sacks by now

This is an interesting question, but I agree that the system is not working. Last night was an indictment of coaching more than players. NO shut out Moss and Welker with guys off the street, and we could not cover anyone. BB did not put players in position to succeed; just the opposite.

I agree. The DBs weren't the issue last night. You can have Deion Sanders in his prime and we get torched.

Funny thread .

lets see last year we had avg pass rush so the plan to improve over offseason was.

1)Trade your leading sack leader - seymour - done
2)Sign banta and trade for burgess .Banta - 5 sacks and burgess no idea probabily 0 or 1 - done
3) Wonder how we are not getting more sacks when we traded our 8 sack de away and replaced with rushing OLB who cannot sack.

I know 2011 draft will be intresting but can anyone tell me if we had a DE who has 5 sacks now will be totally bummed and disappointed during draft time in 2011.

Green was getting blocked by a RB and wright was taken care by a gaurd. Vince was doubled and 2 guys on warren meant they had 2 blocker free to pick up what ever we send.
no pass rush.

BB was calling a lot of plays tonight.

I hope you have some proof for this because, if true, both he and O'Brien are not very good playcallers and BB would be best served sticking with what he knows best, the defese. There was absolutely no excuse for coming out five wide on that first down after the type of smashmouth drive we had put together at the beginning of the game. If he wanted to throw, fine. But disguise it a little better than that (such as a singleback, two or three wide formation, throwing out of a play action). Also, that draw play to Faulk should not be called nearly as much as it does. I think it's pretty safe to say that defenses have figured that one out, Bill (whichever "Bill" is really calling the plays)

Yep. The loss of Seymour was extremely visible last night. With him, we were generating a better pass rush with three guys than we have been this year sending 4-6 guys. Imagine what TBC could do running up the B or C gap right behind Seymour.

The bust that is Adalius Thomas has messed up this team in several ways. He was supposed to be the big pass rusher, and wasn't. He was a big FA splash, which has probably made the front office even more disinclined to make big FA splashes. And he costs a ton. If I met him I think I'd punch him in the nose...he's a lot bigger than me, but I'd just run away--there's no way he'd be able to catch me, obviously.

Yes, I agree. We need to get rid of AD's contract next season and try to find the consistent playmaker that he was supposed to be. AD was supposed to be the guy that opposing offenses gameplanned against. I don't believe that's actually happened since he's been here.

I would add though its not coincidence that seymour had most of his sacks in the first few weeks last year with AD getting 5.
TIll ad went down both had 10-11 sacks from just the left side of the line as these 2 just made match up problem on the same side. No 1 player is going to improve without balance.

Why is nobody mentioning my name?

I want OUT OF CAROLINA!

I think a first rounder would buy me.
