Pats considering Butler trade to Saints for Brandin Cooks

why not? at this point, the dude is walking next year anyway

The franchise tag is still at our disposal. So that's mot necessarily true. The franchise tag still allows us to trade him for value or keep him around.

If Bill thinks it is a good idea, something must make him think it looks a good idea.

Of course BB also thought trading for Ocho Cinco was a good idea too.

I never understood his fascination with him.

They are CHAMPS.
They became champs repeatedly by following a set of rules, this seems to go agaisnt those rules. The last time BB changed that philosophy was 2007 (after the afccg loss to the colts) when he moved away from an emphasis on defense to an emphasis on offense. It didn't work out well. While it resulted in fantastic offensive numbers it also resulted in a super bowl loss to the giants. when BB switched back to a defense first team it resulted in two super bowls.....thats my story and i'm sticking to it.

I don't like it if it's a straight up trade. Living in New Orleans I get to catch every Saints game, and Cooks is not a #1 wide out. He's a burner that can stretch a defense and always a home run threat, but doesn't have any of that Edelman/Welker toughness to his game. He's small too and needs separation.
Maybe BB feels he needs to get something now for Butler before it's too late, but a #1 corner for a 3rd or 4th option receiver for next year does not seem fair.

If BB sends Butler + 32 to the Saints for Cooks he needs brain surgery...Butler should be enough.
Hannable almost immediately updated his "proposal" as Butler + #32 for Cooks + the Saints #42.

I guess #11 in the First would be coming our way that's the only way I make that deal.

I value those picks. This team still doesn't know what will happen with hightower and they need a DE pass rusher.

Cooks's a heck of a player but i value defense alot more. That's why it doesn't make sense to give them pick 32. Even if it they gave us number 42 in the second round. I don't like it.

No, it's not. Franchise tag deadline was back on 4 March.

You realize the Pats have the money to trade Butler for Cooks and still make the appropriate moves on defense, correct? Belichick isn't going to just let that side of the ball fall apart to turn the offense into a pinball machine.

Man, this place has me all turned around. I'm talking about Cooks in the Gilmore thread, and Gilmore in the Cooks thread!

Free Agency season is nuts.

Here is the trade mechanics of an RFA. Thank you, @Miguel !

1) Saints and Butler agree on long-term deal. Butler signs RFA tender. Patriots trade a signed Butler to Saints.
2) Saints and Butler then execute long-term deal. Patriots have no dead money. Pats' cap space is increased by about 3.4M.

There may be factors like Butler saying he wants a Gazillion dollars a year, all guaranteed, and Bill thinks 'screw that'.

There are likely to be many factors at play, and in the end, Lombardi will tell us.

Butler isn't unrestricted until next year. So I'm talking about next year. We've tendered him and likely have him for 2017.

He could possibly go out and sign a deal this year, forcing our hands, but that seems unlikely. The number of suitors planning for him would be different when they know he's available. Free agents are flying off the board already, so the list of teams he can go to, goes down. I don't think he forces the Patriots hands by signing with the 9ers. He'd have better choices in a year.

If we trade for Cooks fine, but please not for Butler.

Aren't the Saints in Cap Hell??? They shouldn't be making such demands especially when they are up against it...who does Payton think he is???
