Again, I said long term upside. Garoppolo may be out of the league in a few years the way he is going. Four years as a starter and only one where he didn't miss time due to injuries. Two of them on IR.

If Garoppolo showed he could stay healthy and play through injuries, it would be one thing. He just cannot stay on the field and for a QB that is death.

If he showed he could stay healthy then SF wouldn’t be drafting his replacement.

What, me worry?
Toughness, or lack thereof, is what Jimmy lacks.
That, and good judgement when it comes to porn stars.

Don't forget that the 49ers are drafting a ROOKIE QB at #3. There's no reason to rush the rookie when you already have a sunken cost in JG. They are never going to get equal value for JG because 1) They have no leverage 2) JG is injury prone 3) Nobody will take JG's current contract as it is 4) JG has a no trade clause. JG can simply sit tight. If the 49ers cut him, then he becomes FREE to choose whatever team he wants, and that means new bonus money with a new contract, which his agent would love. If they don't cut him. He makes 25m dollars a year. EZ decision. Sit tight.

Same for the Patriots, the best course of action is to sit tight, wait for SF to cut him. Giving up one or more picks and restructuring/extending his current contract means we're in cap hell if we need to get rid of him. After working through the 'voidable years' cap hit of Brady's last contract, I doubt BB is up for more of that action.

Great point.

The 22-8 guy is obviously much, much less than the 2-667 ghost watcher.

Surprised more people don't see that

That is the thing the Jimmy crowd is missing. If Garoppolo was that good and they were confident he could be their franchise QB for years to come, they wouldn't be mortgaging their future on Mac Jones. Since Garoppolo got them to a Super Bowl, it is clear that is his ability to stay on the field is the issue in San Fran.

Again, it isn't about the play on the field. It abut Jimmy not being able to stay on the field. You do realize that Garoppolo has missed more games (25) due to injury than he has won (22)?

I don't think Darnold has much of a future, but I think he could be in the league 5-10 years from now in some capacity. I don't think Garoppolo will be.

True, say if he was released who would be interested and have the cap to do so?

Bears gave Dalton 10m guaranteed with no cap space.

Texans Maybe depending on what happens with Watson

Denver is a real possibility tons of cap space and Bridgewaters contract is releasable.

NE If they don’t draft a QB this weekend then JG is on the table, however doesn’t fall in line with the narrative with Cam. I think Cam is their guy this year.

Washington is also a possibly but less likely with Heineke and Fitzpatrick.

Eagles ehh...I think they want to see more Hurts as their starter.

I don’t really see anywhere else either via trade or FA.
I think there are a few teams for sure but no one is giving him $25 mil. He probably gets a on year prove it deal at $12-15 mil.

It's not a sunken cost. They can dump him and save $25m.

If they do that over the summer, Garoppolo isn't getting a big deal anywhere.

Why is it funny? At the rate Garoppolo is going, he will be out of the league in a few years. You can't get injured year after year like he does and stick around. A mediocre QB who can stay on the field is better than an elite player who spends most every season on IR.

Mediocre is Sam Darnold’s wildly optimistic upside.

Yeah, Brady has played with worse than the shoulder injury Garoppolo had when he was filling in for Brady during his suspension. Probably most starting QBs have. If you can’t count on a QB to play every game week in and week out, then he cannot be your franchise QB. That is why the 49ers are giving up on the guy and they haven’t hid that fact.
I don't know about that. If this was really a problem I don't think the Pats would be all that interested either. Pats need a QB and I'm sure they'd rather not pay for JG to be on IR and forced to play Cam.

I think Bill's hubris makes him believe he can manage Jimmy to not get as injured as he was in San Fran.

Colts thought Manning would never be the same after his neck injury (Luck helped too.)

Chargers/Dolphins flunked Brees on medical projections.

Both teams wanted to move on, and that was great news for the Broncos and Saints.

Injury concerns about also the only opportunity for teams to acquire good QBs in the modern NFL.

I don’t see the relevance of Jimmy’s injuries unless they’re being used to project the future likelihood of being injured again. I haven’t seen too much on here that even attempts to address that. Saying Kyle Shanahan wants to move on isn’t relevant that much when it comes to an injury indictment..there has been friction between Shanahan and Jimmy even during the SB season because Jimmy isn’t a great for that offense.

For every Derrick Rose, there are a lot of guys who get injured, recover, and they’re fine. I haven’t seen many QBs in the modern era with more susceptibility to injuries like a torn ACL (non-contact) or high ankle sprain. These aren’t conditioning injuries.

Are you sure? We needed him to start four games while Brady was suspended. Garoppolo lasted a game and half before he was injured and out for the rest of Brady's suspension.

I am not against getting Garoppolo as a short term stopgap until they can develop a draft pick, but the guy probably have no long term future in this league. I personally think he doesn't have two vastly underrated QB skills - the ability to protect his body while playing (knowing how to take a hit and not playing recklessly) and the toughness to play through injuries. Two things that Brady excels at and Garoppolo doesn't. When Jimmy tore his ACL he did so making a cut to try to get an extra yard or two on 3rd and long when he needed about 5-6 to get the first down. A smart QB would have just gone out of bounds in that situation.

The Manning and Brees comparisons are apples and oranges. Manning almost never missed games. They were just concerned about his neck that wasn't healing the way they wanted it and his age. It wasn't like Manning had a history of getting injured and missing games.

And Miami took Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees. If they were so concerned about injuries, no way would they have done that. Culpepper's knee was basically shot. He tore three of the four ligaments in his knee the year before the Dolphins traded for him and he was never the same again. Meanwhile in four years as a starter in San Diego, Brees missed a total of six games (5 in 2003 and 1 in 2004).

Look...Jimmy is a better QB than Cam. Zero doubt.
But...Jimmy appears to be soft/fragile.
That isn’t an attractive trait.
If he comes for a low pick I like it. A 2 or 3?
I would hate it

I see you don’t know the actual circumstances around those decisions but as usual will run your mouth by cherry picking irrelevant information.
