Patriots working on a contract with Jimmy G?

Why are the two mutually exclusive?

Pats talking with 49ers but nothing is happening at the time

Dale Arnold said that the Pats and Garoppolo were negotiating a new deal. So Howe is disputing that claim.

But the Pats can't trade for Garoppolo without a new deal. They don't have the cap space for his current contract. The Pats cannot get a deal done with the 49ers without Jimmy G redoing his deal.

If we get Jimmy Cam is as good as gone
do you think? I can't see anyone else wanting him. He is on back up money and with JG here he is virtually guaranteed to start quite a few games in a season.

Were doomed.

Belichick is stubborn and wants to prove to Kraft that he was right drafting GQ and never wanting to part with him. After watching GQs career from afar, I predicted these events months ago. GQ finally wore his welcome out in San Fran. Even during his Super Bowl best season, GQ was a glorified game manager. GQ completed 6 passes for 77 yards in the NFCC vs Green Bay.

BB was just waiting for the opportunity to bring his Son home.
all true, but still the Pats best option at QB this year. Would love to see JG throwing to the 2 new TEs.

If you trade for Jimmy G you can't bemoan bad luck when he's injured after 6 weeks and your season goes down the toilet, he can play but his durability is a massive concern forget the 49ers 2 season enders, he couldn't even get through 4 games here the first time and i remember questions about his toughness and how bad the injury really was at the time.

Pats may want to see how the draft shakes out. Maybe in their mind fields is #1, if they can't get him then Jimmy is behind door #2

Like Brady was in 2018, and 2019.
Yeah

Brady was clearly a game manager. In 2020 as well. Managed all the way to ring 7.

Jimmy and Brady are the same. Book the flights and hotels and get the champagne ready.

If JG was the answer the niners wouldn't be moving on from him. Far too many concerns about injuries. if it came down to just play he is good IMO but you can not rely on him at all.

No one is trading for that Jimmy contract the way it is now, nobody even has the cap space to afford it.

Jimmy's salary is a little over $24 million for each of the next two seasons. Easily tradable if you are the 49ers (2.8 mil in dead money, but a cash and cap savings of almost $50 million (over the two seasons). However, the team trading for Jimmy would be on the hook for that whole salary. Only the jaguars have enough cap space right now to trade for that contract and we all know that is not going to happen.

So if SF wants to move Jimmy, they are going to have to let the trading team renegotiate that contract, period end of story.

SF threw Jimmy under the street cars making him play with that George Kittle.

What would you call brady's game in 2018 and 2019. Brady and the offense struggled which lead the Patriots to adopting a heavy run offense. And having brady make plays when needed. It's what lead to half this board declaring brady slipping or being done when in reality it was shifting the offense due to lack of talent at the skill positions. That 2018 superbowl was defense, the running game and some brady magic drives when needed.

You can't throw 2020 in there because brady had a plethora of weapons. The talent discrepancy between the 2019 pats and 2020 bucs skill position players is no contest.

Now if the argument is Jimmy G can't make those "got to have it" plays brady made in 2018 that's a different story. Because in 2018 brady made the 3rd down plays to beat KC. While in 2019 Jimmy G whiffed in the 4th quarter.

I think it was actually Stidham that set up and ran the workouts
Likely already addressed, but I think it's both. Cam at the team organized voluntary workouts and Stidham with the "on his own recognizance".

"Injury prone Garoppolo" is interesting, considering that he has had two serious injuries in SF a torn ACL and a high ankle sprain, much of this sounds like sports talk radio BS... both injuries are common in the NFL.

The way this is being made out is that JG is somehow doing this on purpose..

I am not a huge fan of bringing JG back to the Pats as the top 5 QB's seem to be better choices, but if they do somehow pull this off with a reasonable contract then they could bring in a Mond, Trask etc later on.

Are you suggesting that a player who is prone to injuries being described as injury prone is a sports talk radio hot take?

He's played 34 games in 4 years, including post season since joining San Francisco. He's been literally unavailable through injury half the time he's been there. If that doesn't make him injury prone, what does?

So he was traded for a 2nd round pick on his rookie deal, and as far as we new at that time, there was no reason to think he'd be this brittle.
Now, for the life of me, I dont understand why the pats would want a quarterback that has shown to be unable to stay healthy and pay anything over minimum with incentives. And thats only if the Pats didnt have to give anything up for him.

I'll take a full season of Newton at 10mil, than 3 games of Jimmy even at the same price.

Likewise. you can't bemoan the reality that these rookie QB's suck and lose game after game because they suck.

However, maybe it's best to draft the kid who started 6 games and threw 50 passes for Southwest Bullfrog Creek State because.....well.....he did well in an interview with Rich Eisen.

However, your point is taken and it's genius.

Because he has been with the 49ers for three and a half seasons and during that time he has missed 23 games during that time due to injuries. Add the two games he missed as Patriots starter and he has missed more games due to injury (26) than he has career wins (23). In the full three years as a starter for the 9ers, he played 25 out of 48 games. That is why his value is low.

Darnold has more long term upside than Garoppolo. Darnold's problems could be more about the talent around him and the coaching rather than his talent. Garoppolo's problem is he can't stay on the field due to injuries.

The Pats cannot count on Garoppolo being the starting QB for more than a year or two. If they trade for Garoppolo, they still probably need to get a QB in the first or second round this year. Garoppolo is nothing more than a stop gap since he is likely to be out of the league in a few years due to all the injuries.

The injuries he had in SF were a torn ACL and a high ankle sprain, both common injuries for NFL players.. does that make him injury prone???

JG's injury history tends to be overstated..

With that being said, still don't think the Pats should overspend their draft capital on him..
