Patriots Training Camp Primer – Offensive Line

Steve Balestrieri

The Patriots entered 2014 with questions along the offensive line. Unfortunately in 2015 questions about the guard position will again have to be answered.

It has been many years since the Patriots had a dominating run game. Mostly it has been merely complementary to the Brady's short passing game. And the composition of the Offensive line reflected that. It was merely competent, and good at pass blocking but was not big enough to consistently force the run.

But my suspicion is that things are changing. I suspect that BB is planning to emphasize the run game. Ever since the Pats selected Sebastion Volmer at 6-8 320 lbs, they seem to have opted for tough, physically large and dominant pass blockers; but who could also force the run.

Solder's arrival added another huge piece at the all important Left tackle position. Unlike the typical tall but lean LOT, Solder is a massive at 6-8 and 320 pounds and known for his ability to run block as well as pass block. Unlike the typical smaller Center, Bryan Stork @ 6-4 and 315, is big and dominant in both pass and run blocking. Turning to the Guard positions BB and his coaches selected very big Guard conversions in guys like Cam Fleming and this year in Tre Jackson. Even last years washout, Jon Halapio was a noted big run blocking bruiser. This years second Offensive line selection in Shaq Mason is much more noted for his run blocking than for his quickness at Center in pass blocking. He will have to learn that as a reserve or a PS development candidate.

Don't forget the acquisition of Chandler and LaFell at TE and X WR. Both are good run blockers with size. Even the reserve receivers Tyms and Dobson are sizeable pass receivers who can run block, as can the smurfs Amendola and Edelmen.

The RBBC features big RBs with Blount, Gray, Gaffney, all over 225 #s, and even the 3rd down back candidates weight in at 210 or so.

Every season BB changes his team's emphasis and that makes it difficult for opponents to adapt. I suspect that this year the gargantuan line, receivers, TEs, and RRBs will force the run, and truly making the Pats Offense balanced and unpredictable, when accompanied by the awesome passing game.

I neglected to add the Prime Reason, I think, that BB has decided on this course of action. If he is forced to play Polo due to Brady's suspension, for a quarter of the season, a dominant Run game will make the job easier for the raw and inexperienced QB.

If Belichick had acquired any quality running backs, I might agree with your suggestion.

I wanted a re-signing of 1300 yard big back Steven Ridley but BB felt he was up against the CAP and decided not to offer big extensions to any RB. I think he believes it is a very fungible position.

Both Blount who had a 148 yard game; and Grey who turned in a 201 yard game, are not mentioned with the Adrian Peterson, or Marshawn Lynches of the football world. But the cost is 1/3 to 1/5 as much.

But I suspect that BB would rather have 3 good RBs signed for the cost of one (often overused) Star RB. The Stars are not three times the running prowess of a good collection at RBBC, at three times the cost, which they do.

We have Absolutely Nobody currently on this roster capable of playing starter-quality LG or Swing Tackle.
Bill obviously had a very good idea that Connolly would retire, yet did nothing whatsoever to acquire his replacement via either the draft or free agency.
If Evan Mathis signs with the Doofins as Balestrieri suggests, I will become extremely pissed-off.

The answer at swing tackle is already on the roster I will give you a clue his name rhymes what's with Rake Wreck it.
Clearly this was the master plan all along over draft a defensive lineman never letting him see the field yet never cut him completely. Have him learn the defensive line position to know what he is going up against what better way a little art of war here.
Then try him at tight end so he learns the offense as a whole and then when he absorbs that you release the hall of fame swing tackle tight end monster hybrid who makes JJ Watt and Gronk Squeamish that's right boys and Girls Jake hit the breaks Bequette.
Genius pure unadulterated genius.
BB's biggest FU to the league ever.
