I feel better about our blocking TEs this season, so I think we'll be seeing a lot of them.

Some people get upset at this suggestion, while I wouldn't give up on TT, I'm definitely not opposed to starting someone on IR with Foxboro Flu.
I believe that a player has to be on the 53 to return to the team after being on IR.

So, sure, Thornton could be on the 53 and then on IR, and available later if there is an injury.

Thornton and Douglas play 2 different positions. Thornton is an OUTSIDE receiver where he has JuJu, Parker and Bourne ahead of him. Douglas didn't have anyone ahead of him for the slot position except maybe Bourne, but Bourne's been lining up primarily outside.

I am not surprised that Bourne isn't in the top 4 WR because of the Pats extending Parker and signing JuJu. Thornton is NOT and never has been a SLOT receiver. So complaining the way you are is just ridiculous.
I think you’re being overly critical. Sam Bam is referring to overall impact as a receiver. That’s how I took his comment.

Sure or we could redshirt Boutte. There’s options if we don’t think he can make it through to take Nixon’s place on the practice squad.

Agreed.

Having said that, Mac stayed late to throw to Tyquan and I assume that is because Mac is under throwing TT. That speed is quite unique - I smile when balls are repeatedly under-thrown because the QBs can adjust. I love the speed. Boutte and Douglas can not match that - TT and Douglas are complimentary, not competitive. Fingers crossed TT breaks out this year or next. It might take him 3 years to fully blossom.

A couple of thoughts after reading this thread....so far. DISCLAIMER - I wasn't at the practice, because I was walking at the beach this morning looking out over the Pacific Ocean, SO anything I write is just an inference based on the posts

1. Teams often use these non-padded practices to install various aspects of their game in all areas, so they ARE important even if there doesn't seem to be much going on. Sucks for the spectators but I guess its a beautiful day, so not too bad.

2. I pretty much disregard any so called stats from these days, so it is HARD to make judgments on any position battles that are happening. Roster decisions will start to be made based on what they see over the next 2 weeks

3. Sucks that BOTH the practices with other teams will be held on the road. Those were the must see events of the preseason for me.

4. I think the talent is there for us to have a decent OL first 7, but it will be a work in progress early in the season unless we start to see at least SOME continuity on the OL over the next two weeks. I mean first I was concerned about TB from reports on his condition during OTA's, THEN I'm fine because he looked like he reported to camp in shape and passed the conditioning test. NOW I'm concerned again because he's practicing again by himself. Strange looked like he had a nothing glitch, yet HE hasn't practiced since it happened, and the lack of at LEAST any news about Owenu is starting to concern me. Is he going to be there for the start of the season or not? The more time they spend together the better they will be, and as of day 10 of a VERY short TC the so called starting OL has spent almost ZERO time together.

5. And now I'm going to rant and sound like an angry old man. But Jeeess, every day I see all these injuries reported from TC across the NFL and I think "back in the day when I played....." (and you know NOTHING good ever comes after THAT opening ). we had 2 a days, EVERY day. and 90% of them were full pads and we BANGED, and sure guys were sore and often bruised, but I can't remember there being half the injuries that cause guys to miss days and days of practice like we are seeing today.

Now granted this is back when OLmen were in the 260-270 range and people were smaller and slower, but DAMNED man, TC has become positively "****ified" compared to what was going on even 20 years ago. And remember most of the initial collisions that were made back then were made with the HEAD, and were that much more violent.

The Athletes today are better, they train year round, their diets are better as well as the techniques and knowledge about training are so much better. Yet the athletes seem to be more fragile and the more they do to try and protect these valuable assets the more they seem to get hurt. Are they simply just not as tough as we were 'back in the day"? I don't think so, but I'm hard pressed to come up with something that is starting to drive me NUTS.

Maybe I should just go back to the beach and sit in a lotus position and contemplate my navel and not worry about this **** while I can.

Boutte has apparently made a few plays that have opened some eyes over the past few days, but that is a far cry from balling out to the extent that he is in good shape to make the 53. Tyquan who was having a better camp last year than Boutte is this year, before his injury. Not only do the Pats have more invested in Tyquan in terms of money and draft capital but all accounts he is known to be a hard worker and is baggage-free.

Most importantly, he (potentially) provides them with an element of elite deep speed that they otherwise lack. Boutte’s strengths are more redundant, in the context of their veteran wide receiver corps.
The only way I see him making the 53, in the absence of a (God forbid) major WR injury, is if he goes off in the joint practices and preseason games and makes Bourne expendable via trade.

The notion that they are going to give up on Thornton so early in his career, particularly after his year 1 development was stunted by both his injury and the 2022 offensive coordinator, is silly to me.

I don’t think they will give up on Thornton especially since hes back practicing.
I wonder if he makes it over a third tight end or like you said over a Vet like Bourne or unfortunate injury to a fellow wide out.

So I went to practice today, things I noticed versus maybe what has been written here or in the media:

First it was just shells, stop saying the OLine lost and that’s why the defense shined. There’s no contact, that’s foolish. The defense shined for sure, but the offense had some moment too. This is a really good defense, the defense shined because the coverage is smothering. Finding windows will be tough for any offense.

Tyquan Thornton: Let’s set aside that he needs to stay healthy, let’s pretend that’s a given and he’s healthy. There’s nothing at all wrong with TT, his QB’s have to better adjust to him, not the other way around. I lost count of how many passes were late, slow to arrive and under thrown. He gets open… period.

What I’ve noticed also, an extension of last season, Zappe throws better passes to Thornton. I think Mac has improved high pointing the ball to Parker, but hasn’t mastered throwing leading passes to Thornton. He shouldn’t be throwing high arcing throws to Tyquan, he’s not Parker. Zappe does a better job throwing flatter laser shots that find him faster… even if Zappe struggled a little today. Both Mac and Zappe need to understand, they can’t overthrow Tyquan… he’s too fast and too long. The QB’s need to do better with the deep ball, perhaps why Mac and the kid stayed afterwards and threw.

Gesicki made a sick one handed grab on the sideline, it was impossible to defend. He is long and can body out defenders. Both he and Henry seemed to catch everything thrown at them except for one great play by Peppers in the end zone to punch it out.

If he stays healthy Devante Parker may have a late career renaissance. He is involved and Mac is putting it high and away, few CB’s can jump or outmuscle Parker downfield.

Bourne dropped at least two balls that hit him directly in the hands with no defender around. Not sure it’s a problem, but it happened.

Douglas is a hummingbird, hard to find and track. He’s firmly entrenched with the starters.

I don’t know if anyone noticed but the Pats gave both Keion White and Ronnie Perkins #51. It’s almost like they’re trying to hide him. It’s not working, White looked like he had pads on… he didn’t. The guy is powerfully built.

Mapu seems just as slick in coverage on TE’s as he is rushing forward at runners. He should make the middle of this D a lot faster.

Firkser was pretty involved in the passing game, it’s apparent they see him as a checkdown weapon/HBack/FB… what they envisioned with Jonnu.

Bolden and Speed getting a lot of reps in the defensive backfield. Seems like they want one of these guys to emerge. Bolden looked pretty good again.

Bledsoe would have been a good match for TT.

Speaking of gonzo, do you see what I mean about getting too caught up in camp. Now phil perry was suddenly saying he has some concerns about gonzo for his last few practices LOL.. these guys report any way the wind blows.. I guess according to some posters on here about Thornton.. maybe gonzo is a bust too huh LOL..
