Patriots Super Bowl week Thread: Practice Notes, Injury Updates, etc.

Been an underrated defender especially second half of the season. Was likened to big Vince for last week's performance. Only backup is Branch, whose health is uncertain.

Branch was healthy for Jacksonville, but didn't play. I'd like to see him in the rotation regardless of Brown, but I wonder if he is in good graces. Guys his size tend to get out of shape when they can't move freely for a while.

why do you think this? My initial reaction was why practice outside in the cold when the game is in a dome. Wouldn't it be better to practice in game like conditions?

I don't. I used the stupid presumption of them playing in the weather to make a joke about them being frozen solid at game time. I knew the game was inside.

This was part of the Reiss quote " Bill Belichick traditionally practices outside regardless of the elements, and it will be interesting to see how he handles things next week."

Schwartz doesn't blitz very often, but the Eagles blitz and blitz-fakes have been fairly effective.

I have to wonder how McD and Brady would respond if Schwartz sent the house out of coverage formation on the Pats first two or three snaps.

The Eagles don't have a lot of sacks but they get pressure and force the ball out quickly with 4 guys.

Cassius Marsh is now in line to be a free agent but he’s hoping to return to the 49ers for the 2018 season.

“From the moment I got here I felt at home,” Marsh said, via the Sacramento Bee. “And I was coming from something that, for the first time, really felt like I was away from home and turned the game I love into true work.

Bb whiffed on that one but he made up for it with the wise, butler and lee haul, not to mention the steelers gift of harrison.

That is so darn sad. Belichick turning their jobs into work, what a ****.

I hope Gronk is cleared for media day. Would be a shame to miss out on some good soundbites.

either way, looks like wise/Gronk/Brown all should be good to go for the big game.

Belichick has said before that his program isn't for everyone. Looks like we found one of those people - and glad to see that Belichick was willing to swallow his pride and risk the embarrassment of everyone acknowledging he made a bad trade, rather than continue to carry a guy like this on the roster.

I firmly believe that Belichick prides himself on his rigorous unemotional objective self-evaluation. So it would be very surprising if he did not acknowledge and act as soon as it became clear that Marsh was not fully buying into the program.

Yeah, this highly aggressive idea of "let's make him uncomfortable" is revolutionary. Once Vegas sees this, the odds may switch on the game.

Plus, it is such a motivational rallying cry: "Let's go cause discomfort!"

The League safety committee should look into this. Does that kind of thing have a place on the football field? It is a violent sport, yes, but we aren't savages!

Like I said, very worrisome. I just can’t figure out why a defense would take this approach. I thought Tomlin’s blueprint of “ talk as much sh.t as possible, then lull Brady into his comfort zone by making him as comfortable as possible in the pocket, and tip off your defensive weaknesses as obviously as you can” had been working really well for everyone, e.g.. the Patriots only have two Super Bowl titles this decade.

I’m excited to see the Iggles novel defensive approach.

Marquis Flowers has been worth the combined price of Flowers and Marsh. That's the beauty of these low cost deals.

7th for Flowers.
6th for Van Noy and a 7th.
5th and 7th for Marsh.
5th for O'Shaughnessy and a 6th.

Even with the two bad ones we got M. Flowers and Van Noy for two 5ths if I cancelled out correctly.

I fully agree. To that point --- *that* is one of the great differentiators between Belichick and the rest. He doesn't really draft, trade, or sign free agents at an exceptional pace although he is generally above average in all of them. But he cuts bait with his mistakes much faster than anyone else, regardless of the initial cost of the transaction. Kony Ealy and Cassius Marsh are two examples from this year. Dominique Easley, first round pick, was flat out cut after 2 seasons even though his actual on field production was decent the few times he was out there. This decisiveness allows him to churn through the roster in attempts to find solutions to problems. Doesn't always work out but sometimes it does.

Yikes. Wish we had known that about him prior to the trade. Ah well. It happens. This is a tough place to play, but he definitely didn't have what it takes.
