Player Signing Patriots sign WR Jalen "Always Hurt" Hurd

Definitely an interesting profile, being a WR conversion from RB. Could figure to be a Cordarrelle Patterson-type if he can stay healthy in NE.

It would be very interesting if he could be a 3rd down back.

Interesting guy. 6'5", 225 lbs. Was a good RB at Tennessee for a few years until he had a concussion so he transferred to Baylor to switch to WR. Not sure about his injuries at the 49ers (back and ACL) but he was durable in college, except for the one time concussion.
Read somewhere he had problems with the ACL after he came back from it and sat for it again, which got him cut by SF. So if he got it sorted out and healed and didn’t lose too much in the process he could be a sleeper. Looks like a project, expect PS if anything for him.

EDIT: found it, in this article…
Report: Patriots Sign WR Jalen Hurd, LB Diego ***ot to Fill Out 90-man Roster
Hurd's NFL career was derailed due to a season-ending back injury as a rookie, followed by a torn ACL ahead of his 2020 season. The 27-year-old wideout then had a setback with his ACL recovery that prevented him from being on the field in 2021, and the 49ers eventually waived him with an injury settlement.
He’s been out of the NFL since November 2021 so that should have given him enough time to get totally healthy and then get back into shape. Will be interesting to watch.

That story links to a tweet about his performance in a preseason game with a couple of nice TDs. Noticed on the first one the first guy to congratulate was a familiar player, our own Kendrick Bourne. Maybe having the two of them together will help them both do better.

Yes I did read that he lost two seasons to the same ACL injury. After 13 months, tendinitis flared up in the knee and did not calm down for a few more months so the 49ers released him. I assume the ACL is 100% now. He was released in Nov. 2021, almost 2 years ago. The ACL tear was in July 2020.

Big guy at WR and great at YAC because he used to be a very good RB in college.

Hurd signed to keep medical staff sharp

Comparison to Cordarelle Patterson is encouraging.

I like the signing.

Hurd, 4.6 40, is not as fast as Patterson, 4.4 40. Hurd is 3" taller, 15 lbs heavier, and a strong guy. Big question is what happened to Hurd over the last 20+ months. That is a long time to be away.
Ideally first three or four months were getting the ACL right and the next six or seven were getting into top shape. If he’s been working with someone like my physical therapist he’ll be good to go. She and her husband work with clients including Steph Curry and Chris Paul. I’m four months post op on my second hip replacement and I‘ve been back to full activity for over a month and overall I’m in as good condition as ever. So if Hurd worked with somebody at her level he’ll be fine.

With that name he'd be a better fit in Philadelphia.

I watched some college highlights and he just does not seem quick or nifty or fast. He seems like a real long shot to make it, but who knows. He is big, but slow and lumbering. The Patriots must be desperate if they think he can help.

I caught the tail end of Felger ranting about some issue with JuJu Smith-Schuster but did not get the gist of it. What was that about?

So are you ready to sign with an NBA team yet? Who are you considering?

another project to learn how to play WR in the NFL beside Cunningham, Douglas, Lee and Boutte.
all have some physical skills that would translate to an nfl WR, but all a long ways away.
Pats needed additional WR's for camp, why not take a look?

He worked out for a few teams recently so I assume he must be back to good health at this point and looking for a chance.

They're desperate because of who they signed to a minimum salary for the last slot on a 90 man roster in July?

San Fran is an injury factory...If he's signing now on the eve of camp it's got to be for short money... Basically camp competition... Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't... Nbd either way

I'm intrigued by hurd.. a 6'5 RB.. wow.. I know there was buzz about him with the 49ers.. he seems like a hungry guy.. out the league for 2 seasons.. at 6'5.. I like the signing.. someone who's hungry there will come in and work hard for a roster spot.. in a perfect NFL world he would come in here and take an opportunity for himself.. I honestly believe no one is guaranteed a roster spot this camp.

Hurd was out of the league for 4 years and was never in the league. Unique situation. Like a rookie but has pre-season experience.

That’s the first time I have heard of a 6’5 running back.
