Patriots sign Rex Burkhead

The guy has been wasted in Cincy - and we have seen this story before. He is gonna get a real shot here - all the RB snaps are going to be up for grabs.

150 carries isn't out of the question.
I don't think anyone is calling him THE every down, but he has the traits to be one.
He has what it takes to be the leader of the committee.

What evidence is that? Hes carried the rock over 12 times in a game once.

The guy was an every down back in college - I think he can handle the work. Cincy was letting him rot.

True, but that was the first post-Lewis year. The last 2 efforts have been dismal. And we were not good in the 2012 AFCCG.

So it was Post-Marvin Lewis. And who cares about what happened in 2012 during the AFCCG. How many players from those two teams are still on the two teams?

The last 2 efforts haven't been dismal.

Blount had 72 yards on 18 carries while Lewis had 14 yards on 3 carries this year.. The game plan wasn't to "run the ball". It was to tear apart their mediocre secondary..

The 2014 game was the same way.. The Patriots purposely did not run the ball against Baltimore.. They had 7 carries the entire game.. Again, not because the Baltimore defense limited them.. Because that was the game plan..

This is extremely well know and talked about ad nauseum during the 2014 post season.

Insurance signing.

My guess is that he was signed to compete with a couple draft-weekend pickups (draftees or UDFAs) and maybe Blount for lead, between-the-tackles RB.

If he "loses" that competition, he replaces Bolden on ST (IOW, Bolden could very well be done).

Just that we don't place our expectations too low here..

This is a really interesting signing for the Patriots, as some believe Burkhead may actually prove to be the best running back available in this year’s free agent class.

After learning a little more, I'm a fan of this signing. He has some pretty sweet moves. Obvious questions about ability to handle a big workload, but he was an every-down back in college, so maybe it really was just a case of stupid under-usage by Cinci (I wouldn't be surprised.)

EDIT: ****, this means my binky Foster probably won't make the 53!

As I said previously the agenda will be shown in the contract.

Excellent football player. Not sure if he becomes a ST specialist (where he excels) that also runs the ball (like a better version of Bolden), or a primary runner that also plays special teams.

Very good signing by the Patriots, who are crushing it this offseason.

Now lock up Hightower and keep Butler (or trade him for a 1st round pick+), trade JG for a 1st and a 2nd, have a solid draft, and away we go.
