As usual great article Steve.
 
If we assume that Gronk and Edelman can both beat single coverage quickly, then the default defense against 5 wide is to rush 4, double-cover the two of them, and single-cover the other three.

Doesn't seem very promising.

OK, then rush 3. Hmm.

There are two basic ways to beat 5 wide. One is to sacrifice numbers on the rush, and cover receivers until your rushers can beat double-teams. This has worked against the Patriots on some unpleasant occasions. It's probably the best try now given the state of the OL.

The other is to confuse the QB. This works against the Patriots very rarely, although Rex Ryan has built a major career off of accomplishing it once or twice.
