Patriots new OC - Alex Van Pelt

Man, great, great post thank you for that. Your absolutely correct! We have one thr best franchises in football. Absolutely agree with everything you've mentioned. Feels like Mayo got the right person for the job knowing he's bringing in a new QB.
I think it's real easy to listen to Felger and Mazz and get down on them. (not accusing you of doing that) They have not been the Patsies for over 30 years. Those days are over. I am not buying the "this is an undesirable job" crap some guys are shoveling. Top franchise with the opportunity to make a difference day 1. No pressure, just make the right decision on the QB. Piece of cake, right?

If true will give him a chance but he obviously floundered in Cleveland and was fired. Certainly there were other better qualified, more successful OC out there. I don’t care for McD but even HE would be better than Van Pelt….what is Mayo doing?!

So, will the new OC be more concerned with drafting a QB at #3, which will be advantageous to his own personal growth with the Pats, or agreeing with a trade down, which could be more advantageous to the Pats over all?

Comments:

1.) Last time we saw him, he started for the Bills on 12/16/01 in Buffalo for that game where Brady got his helmet knocked off and David Patten (R.I.P.) luckily possessed a fumble out of bounds. We barely won 12-9. I was at Foxwoods Casino the night before for a Holyfield-Ruiz fight. Was in a hotel room watching the game all alone past check out time... fun season!

2.) Dunno about Stefanski calling the plays not Van Pelt.

3.) Dunno about the Browns firing him after he managed to get Flacco ready to start games despite coming right off the street mid-season.

4.) In Mayo I Trust! LFG!!!

Belichick is gone and other coaches still avoided this place like it's radioactive.

Just because coaches took other jobs that doesn’t mean NE is “ radioactive.” Some here seem to think they cam divine what others are thinking when they really have no idea what their reasons are. It’s like the people who thought they knew who was going on in the front office at Foxborough for the past 6-7 years. Truth is that we have no idea who is saying or doing what, and who supports or opposes what. First people are saying that it was Belichick, which given his demeanor all the time is understandable, but now you’re trying to say that it’s like his ghost in in t hey r building, and no one wants to come here because of the ghost of Belichick. It’s patently rificulous. We don’t know what the personal connections are around the league, and we have little information as to why they are making the decisions they are making. If you want to back these claims with factual reasons for why they did or didn’t get fired, or did or didn’t want take the job then by all means share them with us.

What did Houston have before they drafted Stroud? They were as much of a dumpster fire as the Pats offense but they managed to get a young OC from Shanahan's staff.

Nobody who has an option elsewhere wants to come here. This place has become toxic.

HOU hired DeMeco Ryans, who was DC in SF. He got one of the assistants to come over with him because they had an existing relationship. Mayo played here, coached here. He hasn't built any connections elsewhere. Any OC coming in is signing up to work with a new boss they have no history with (nor even much of a track record to point to of how he runs a team since he's a new HC) and they're doing it with a roster that sucks while still having playoff aspirations from the owner/fans. It's not a good OC situation.

If AVP has a big say in finding a QB - I hope he is looking for FA's, not just rookies.

When is the last time a rookie HC under 40 picked a 1st round rookie QB and had a winning record? (prior to Ryans/Stroud)

I think its important to keep expectations for 2024 realistic.
Van Pelt is inheriting as bad of a situation as exists in the NFL for offense talent.
We could have hired Kyle Shanahan himself and the next year would almost certainly be abysmal.
There are no easy or quick fixes.

It's going to be rough and patience is required. I would hope to ta least see signs of progress b y end of year tow or early year three.

Jumbo is the mascot for Tufts University, the sports teams play under that name, and many “Tuftonians” refer to our fellow alumni, etc. as such (because “Tuftonians” is weird). It originated with P.T. Barnum who was a significant donor to Tufts, including donating the stuffed carcass of Jumbo the Elephant (one of the most popular attractions of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus). Sadly the carcass was consumed in a fire in the 1970s, except for a small remnant of a tusk.

There have apparently been a few Jumbod that have made it to the NFL as coaches, the only players I can recall are a running back in the 1970s (I can't remember his name) and Methuen's own Mark Buben. So it's fun for me to think that a Jumbo will be coaching the Pats. I think one of Kraft's kids (maybe Dan) is also a Jumbo.

I tagged @PatsWickedPissah because, like me, he has shared that he is an alumnus of the College of Engineering. Tufts has generally sucked at football, but for a while was great in sailing. It was pretty good for learning also.
Patsfan Ken is also a Jumbo. My youngest granddaughter is a Tufts EE freshman. She hates Mahomes. :)
There was a Tufts player briefly on the Pats. A Lineperson (Heh) I think. Can't remember details.

So is Nick Caley done here?? Thought he had two interviews.

My wife and I have some connections to Tufts. We have a cousin who's a dentist and went there and we also donated to Tufts in the name of a family friend who passed away a few years ago. He was a heart specialist from Medford who taught a class there. And an odd thing happened after we made that donation. There's also a doctor who graduated from Tufts with the same name as mine and even the same middle initial. After we made that donation I started getting class reunion mail that was meant for him. I ended up calling his office and letting them know so he'd get his mail from Tufts. And now, to top it all off, our youngest son has that doctor as his PCP.

The funny thing is that both of our sons went to multiple colleges and neither one of them has the same attachments to their schools as you and the other Jumbos have about Tufts. They're not into their HS reunions either.
I work for Tufts University and can vouch for what you're saying. I've seen the class reunions and the donor events. Very proud institution.

Mark Buben played defensive end for the Pats from 1979-1981. Went to high school in Methuen. Also a side note: Andre Tippett's son Coby now coaches the cornerbacks for Tufts' football team.

I was a bit negative yesterday, but am more firmly in the camp of "wait and see."

Hoping for the best; it's the definition of "best" that I'm having a hard time getting a clear idea of (or rather, what is an appropriate expectation. Mainly hoping for a better season than last and for a true fight for the playoffs to be made, even if that means we miss out - it's be nice to be in it until the last round of the regular season).

Pelt's resume is marred with complete coaching overhauls, I'm assuming those are things he has no control over. What made the gem stand out in the rough is what I'm wondering, the context behind that would help.

Yes, rumor was he left NE because he wasn't offered the OC job last season.
