Patriots new OC - Alex Van Pelt

Still think they prematurely Gave up on Lance. The Patriots would have been better with a Foxborough high QB and coaching staff last season than what they had.
These guys are expert at what they do. They see the players in practice. Shanahan saw what he had with Lance, saw what he had with Purdy. He made a decision. There is a .0001% chance that he's wrong, because no coach is going to admit to that kind of colossal blunder.

If you believe in draft value charts, the 49ers spent 2580 points to select Trey Lance. The Patriots spent 1050.

The selection of Lance was 2.5x more costly than the selection of Mac Jones.

Okay, Van Pelt (heretofore known as AVP) wasn't on many radars. Not the sexy pick for sure.
But, we have to rally around him and hope for the best - at least he checks the box of "not another 30 year old".
I believe Mayo isn't dumb, he's seen a lot of offenses and probably talked to 100's of people the last few weeks.

AVP & Covington is a little reminiscent of Charlie Weis & Romeo Crennel in '01.

And, lets face it, the league is pretty equalized. A lot of coaches know the philosophy, scheme and plays... nothing is new under the sun.
It's all about who prepares the team best - and really - who has the players that can congeal and overachieve on any given Sunday.

I agree with this part. But beyond scheme, there's strategy, and I think that makes all the difference on Sunday, even when you have the players.

The Commanders just hired Dan Quinn. He has all the players. He was last seen sending his defense in an ultra aggressive strategy to annihilate Jordan Love. He left wide open parts of the field for Green Bay to exploit. And his Pro Bowl defense gave up 47 points. I'm not sure why Washington would ever hire a guy like that. He's commanded two defenses in his life full of Pro Bowlers, and has relatively little to show for it. Unless he's an amazing personnel guy and the true brains behind Dallas and the Legion of Boom, I would stay away from a guy so bad at strategy.

It's hard to take the reflexive doomerism seriously. Dafuq is it based on?

Who would have actually taken the job that the Pats could have taken instead but didn't?

The Pats have the worst offensive roster in the league maybe. No gold-plated OC is making the lateral move out of their current OC job to take this one. Certainly no OC with the juice to angle for a HC job is downgrading to Pats OC. You're either getting a total unproven nooblet who stood in line next to McVay at Taco Bell once, or an experienced guy who hasn't made the leap yet. Either choice is a gamble, and pro tip, not every jamoke who played Mario Kart with Kyle Shanahan in college is any good at anything.

What did Houston have before they drafted Stroud? They were as much of a dumpster fire as the Pats offense but they managed to get a young OC from Shanahan's staff.

Nobody who has an option elsewhere wants to come here. This place has become toxic.

Where did we hear that? Also, Pop had a great season (by Patriot rookie standards), but numerous people have pointed out his route running still needs a lot of work. I'm not sure being naturally shifty is a good indication that Brown coached him up.

Also, it doesn't matter how well Brown coached a player in the EP system, if we need to start teaching wide receivers the WC offense.
Read it from a knowledgeable poster a while back TB Coached at last years Shrine game.

This has probably been said before, but one thing I like about the hire is that Elliot Wolf has plenty of experience with AVP and should have a good understanding of what he needs for his offensive players. Having coaches and the GM on the same page should be a recipe for success.

The Browns under achieved. The Patriots did not.

Well that's because you're too optimistic. I would not have predicted anything more than five wins.

The Patriots didn't even address their offensive problems and rely on juju O'Brien to somehow manage this team was laughable at best.

Without knowing who they're getting in free agency it's hard to guess but giving all the changes I wouldn't expect more than five wins again.
You think the Browns underachieved with 11 wins in spite of losing all their QBs and their top RB but the Pats didn't with 4 wins? That's backwards.

I like the posters who love Bill and are hoping the Pats fail.
Bill's team was 4-13 last year and Van Pelts' team was 11-6.
Bill's team missed the playoffs and Van Pelts' team made it.
Bill is too old and Van Pelt is younger.
Bill is out of a job and Van Pelt is employed.
Some of them Hate RK now too because he did the unthinkable and fired their God.

Shanny and lynch, were hell bent and all in together on going for Lance. They knew exactly what they were getting, Trey got hurt with a career threatening injury. Purdy was a relatively unknown, he came in and played well did what he was told. Everything around him was perfect.

What can I tell you? Apparently, they were very wrong.

Yes, and wolf and Mayo from what Curran mentioned have a great working relationship.. I keep hearing this nonsense about no experience for Mayo's coordinators.. malarkey.. covington has been coaching for 8 seasons, Mayo 5, they learned from the best. Bills knowledge is the best thing he could have given to Mayo and covington. Things are coming together. It's a new era in Foxboro I'm hoping for winning, watchable football in 2024!

I don't think we should assume Troy Brown is back. I feel like he was very much a Belichick hire, and Van Pelt should have say in who's under him (which is something they reportedly did not do for O'Brien). I'm sure Mayo respects Brown as a man and a player, but he doesn't owe him a job. They just hired the OC yesterday, the other dominos will start to fall now.

Would keep my eye on Bob Bicknell and Tyke Tolbert

Bicknell was the WRs coach when AVP was the QB coach in Cinci. Also has huge ties to the area From a town that's less than 20 miles from the stadium and went to BC.

Tyke Tolbert was the WRs coach when AVP was the OC in Buffalo

Interesting that Breer said he believes it wasn't Stefanski that fired AVP, but the Haslam's who wanted someone younger to connect to, and focus on, making Watson a star. Supposedly the rest of the coaching staff was surprised and unsettled by seeing AVP go.

That's great to hear. He also said AVP is the "personable and energizing" guy for the offense, and offensive staff.
Can't wait to see how this looks in August.

AVP seems to have a lot going for him literally and figuratively we have done well with Fat OC's: Fat Matt doesn't count.

I mean, Covington is a first-time coordinator, so I see their point, but I think he and Mayo are on the same page, so that'll be fine. I'd feel better if Steve is back on defense, as he seems to be the real Xs and Os guy.

I like the AVP hire rather than taking a chance on some young guy. I'm unsure about the ST coordinator, but we'll see how that goes.

I think Wolf is solid if he's in charge of the personnel.

It's taken me a minute, but I'm coming around. Now get the players.

Yea. I do actually.

If the goal is winning 11 games then alot of teams won the Superbowl this year. Congratulations to them.
