Patriots need a Jordan Mailata

meh, a late round find, like Onwenu, is frosting
hit on your day 1 and 2 draft picks. develop your own.
I am not ready to point the finger at evaluation before developing a drafted player.
these past few drafts, other than Maye, we have had OL men drafted, with either poor or non existent OL coaching. WR's drafted with a part time WR coach or a first year WR coach.

It was a good thing the Eagles didn’t give up on Mailata after he missed his entire rookie season and all but two games of his second season. It can be tough for teams to be patient with developmental prospects, especially one that was only taken in the 7th round. It would be nice for the Pats to find an All-Pro left tackle in the 7th round but that’s an outlier.

Yeah, because time and time again, the Pats fans who reside on this board have proven themselves to be abundantly patient when they don't get an immediate positive response from a player. Can you imagine if the Pats had gotten on with most of 2 GAMES with a of lack of production let alone 2 YEARS.

You know there was a LONG period of time where there were annual additions of starting UDDA's to the roster nearly every year. But to do that you had to have a little PATIENCE. Guys like Neal and Butler and all the Jones boys didn't come wrapped when they first arrived

Stephen Neal says hi.
That was a long time ago. Perhaps best more recent find was Jonathan Jones. I like the idea of looking at international rugby players

He’s in Detroit. Fourth-rounder last year. Giovanni Manu.

This year it’s Logan Brown,RT at Kansas

players not wanting to come here is not failing

If they still don’t want to come here 3-4 years into your your reign then there is sone fault there. But Wolf only got one year in charge. That said I think he prefers working for a coach with a clear idea of the team he wants to field, than trying to guess with a guy like Mayo. Now he and Cowden can make their recommendations and Vrabel will make the call.

I doubt he will last till the 6th round but my binkie in this draft is Willie Lampkin, OG UNC. 5’10 270. He’s the perfect power FB conversion, and he would be great picking up blitz. From the reports at the Senior Bowl he was stonewalling Kentucky DT Deone Walker-6’6 345 at the practices. And he played with Maye at UNC.

Unexpected
7th rounder found with great scouting
High upside
Did not cost a high draft pick

Lets look for high upside players found in unconventional spots

We've had success with guys drafted late or not at all Stephen Neal for example was awesome. Thing is.. we get the LT spot correct the Line can stabilize. Wallace and Robinson last season were rookies in and out the line up, injury ect. I say do whatever to get the LT and add that with the right coaching we could have a good OL again. Anything is better than last season.

I was trying to advocate for big athletic guys who maybe have not played a lot of football like rugby stars

I believe players want some familiarity with the staff. other than a couple of Cleve guys, the Pats had none of that last season.
This season, the staff is littered with coaches from numerous teams, numerous connections.

The seventh round is where you can take risks with unconventional prospect. But most of the time, these players do nothing and are out of the league (many times before even the first kick off of opening game of what would be their rookie season).

Mailata was drafted in 2018. I bet the Eagles haven't had a sixth or seventh round pick who was remotely as successful since.

Jordan took two years of pure development and a lot of time to get good enough to play. Luckily for them he was young.

You can’t hope to recreate that. He was too large for rugby so they sent him stateside, this isn’t common.

The better idea is to sign some value vet F/A’s at the OT position and draft a couple… throw the kitchen sink at it.

Not trying to be a smartass but I think 31 other teams would love getting a top 3 OT in the 7th lol

I wonder if the Raiders would be amenable to trade Jakobi to us.

My point was that I would like to see the Patriots scouting in unconventional places

Your right. He said himself that the transition from rugby was difficult that he even felt like quitting at one point because to learn the OT position was just so difficult. I'm thinking the same thing. Draft and develop OL like the Patriots used too. I'm thinking heading into the season:

New LT, strange LG, Andrews C, Owenu RG, Wallace, LT
