So, the probable top five WR's for the first four games are...

Hmmm... excuse me a second...

Come on. People are starting to overreact here. This team went 12-4 in 2013 with with a healthy JE and not much more. Gronk played 7 games. Amendola tore his groin off the bone in game 1. Dobson Thomson and Vereen?

Hogan is practically a 1000 yard guy here
Matthews has been very productive as a slot receiver
Patterson has been a solid 3rd WR his whole career
Britt has been the most impressive WR in camp
Dorsett has another year in the system and the Pats liked him last year

Plus Gronk, White Michel and even maybe Hill.

I am not trying to go all homer here and they have 2 pretty tough games in the first 4 but this team has won with less. The team will win games without JE and DA. Trust me.

Depends on how Matthews translates in the system but, from where we sit today, that’s a suspect corps.

yep, just about the entire league would be thrilled to have what we do to start the season with. Meanwhile it's doom and gloom for a lot of us here.

Thats what this board does. Panic.

Anyone who was thinking MM was going to be a 70 catch guy here this year was dreaming.

All of the players you mention have proven to be NFL -caliber receivers. Granted they aren't WR1s but they are all most certainly WR2s and WR3s.

Even Dorsett showed in Indy and in a handful of times here he can function as a WR4.

Whether that past performance translates here is the question.

Do not forget about White who is more than solid when he plays receiver role. Edelman,Hogan and let's say Matthews are good starters. Except Gronk there is no superstar catcher but as a team we have got probably the most balanced offense in the league. So I am calm.

Agree.

I purposely didn't comment on JE11 and the RBs as the discussion was focused on the WRs listed.

I'm assuming JE11 will be back to being his old self for the stretch drive. They'll ease him back into the fold.

With White, Burk and eventually Sony they have great options out of the backfield.

For all intents and purposes Gronk is their WR1

I am very high on Matthews. He wasn’t healthy last season. I feel he will do well with this team. Britt has had nice practices but that has to translate on the field. Would be nice to have a big tall wideout on the outside.

This WR corps is going to be a mess. Especially for the first four weeks. Look to see a lot of balls forced into double and triple coverage to Gronk.

I dont understand this sentiment at all. This is not 2013 redux where we are relying on rookies to fit and develop but this time around there is a mix of NFL veterans in addition to one of the most versatile back fields in the entire league. Add in our TEs and we look pretty good on offense - even without Edelman.

dafoe2106 is the worst poster on the board outside of the GDT.

I’ve been waiting for more football discussion before jumping back in the forum. I could not agree more:

Whether you go by OL coaches, PFF, Football Outsiders, etc, the Pats OL is basically a top 10 unit in the league. The RB situation is top 10 when your 3 man rotation is Michel, Burkhead & White.

I guess I’m a homer as well but Brady, Gronk, the RBs, a pretty good OL & JAG WRs is still a tough offense to defend. Britt is a year & a half removed from torching the likes of Sherman/Slay. I really do think he could surprise a lot of people based on Reiss’ earlier reports.

Defensive hysteria is all fine by me as there is legitimate concern worth talking about. Brady with a strong OL, Gronk & throwing to the open WR for four weeks doesn’t worry me much (especially if it lets one of Britt, Dorsett, etc. gain some trust with Tom).

I cannot imagine them getting much (if anything) for Mitchell. That's not meant to be a knock on him because I was really hoping he would be back this year, but he had 400 yards in 2016 before missing an entire season to injury and is now completely up in the air. That's just not a good recipe for ROI.
He helped us win a Super Bowl, A+ pick.

Mitchell for Julio. How could the Failcons resist?

The Lucien prophecy WILL come to fruition. We are bringing back the babe with the go route birth mark.

I can't agree with trading Mitchell at all.

Do they really NEED another complete bag of footballs?

Matthews is the real deal. From 2014-16, he was in the top 5 in the NFL for slot receivers. Also, has a great work ethic, usually one of the 1st players on the field at practice. IF he can stay healthy, he can have a huge impact on this team. 1st 4 games is going to be big for him, he's going to have to replace Edelman. Then when Edelman comes back, he may have some serious success, being that the DBs will cover Edelman, Gronk and Hogan as Brady's 1st options. Key is staying healthy, the whole receiver corps.

So Mitchell for Julio straight up? or do you think that the Pats should get additional compensation from the Falcons??

As much as I like Mitchell, he can't stay healthy, of course that's what I said about Curtis Martin when the Pats let him go, then he didn't miss another down for the rest of his career.

I highly doubt the Pats will get anything for Mitchell, so why trade him? He is still young and under a rookie deal for another year.

We gave up one season of Jones for a guard who started 32 games and a WR who had known knee issues but still was instrumental in a SB win. And lets not forget about some cap room while we are at it.

I dont see how having CJ in 2016 could have made the season a bigger success than it ended up being anyway and we were never gonna resign him because at market price he was neither fit nor value for what a DE needs to do here.

We certainly didn't lose that trade unless you somehow absurdly believe that a CJ extension was on the table. If you do you might be as high as CJ was when he walked in that police parking lot before the KC playoff game.

And given where the Cardinals have been in the last two years I dont see what exactly they have won about it either.

I believe jones should have warranted at least a first round pick in return

Matthews is the real deal. From 2014-16, he was in the top 5 in the NFL for slot receivers.
He was the most productive Slot WR in the NFL for those 3 years. All his first 3 years in the league on top of it.
