Patriots Down Giants 17-12 in Preseason Finale, Quick Observations

Steve Balestrieri

Belichick smiled and cracked, “When’s the last time a quarterback has run more than 85 yards for the New England Patriots,” he joked. “At least 20 years.”

Jackson's "whiff" on the long TD was initially caused by a well-executed pick-play. The fact that he caught up was a positive. The fact that he didn't stop the TD, when it appears that he could have, is a negative. It's highly unlikely that he'll clear waivers to the PS, though.

It seemed to me that CJ played a quietly good and very confident game at CB, and also as a returner. McCarron might still be kept as a reserve WR/returner while Edelman is no suspension, but I feel that CJ might be more useful over the course of the season.

Webb could conceivably make the 53 over Gillislee as a temporary sub. Either way, it seems like one of Burkhead or Michel would need to end up on IR/Eligible to Return to make a spot. It seem unlikely to me that Webb would clear waivers.

Keionta Davis also seems unlikely to clear waivers to the PS. Crossen and Ryan Lewis also seem likely to be claimed.

I don't think that playing in game-4 is necessarily "a bad sign" for JMac. The Pats saw him take the first snaps of his career at safety last week. It seems to me that, if they hadn't liked what they saw, they'd have likely cut him this past week as a courtesy to give him more time to catch a CB job elsewhere.

As a vested veteran, JMac is not subject to waiver claims, so he could still be cut temporarily in order to move another player to IR/Eligible to Return.

Pretty much any of the three temps could be PS worthy, especially KJ Maye, who I thought might make the PS out of Camp last season. He looked improved last night, in spite of having no Camp. Anyway, none of these three seems likely to be claimed off waivers.

I think it's more likely that Webb clears waivers. There will be a LOT of RBs on the wire soon.

I agree that Davis might not pass unclaimed; maybe Crossen too. I think Lewis has a decent chance of passing unclaimed.

I was able to watch the 1st half yesterday on my Sunday Ticket app before my fantasy draft. I'll be watching the 2nd half on the DVR later this afternoon (replay at 4PM EST on NFLN).

Hardest game to watch all year...at least I can fast forward thru the 2nd half...hopefully in under 45 minutes...

Don't understand how Cyrus Jones had a disappointing night. I thought he was excellent in coverage as he played both outside and the slot. Also felt that he wasn't given anything to work with on the kick-offs or punts. In fact, Jackson almost got him killed when he wasn't able to keep up with the gunner and allowed the gunner to wallop Jones unmolested.

I can see zona poaching a 2nd straight rb from us. Especially since foster got hurt.

Agree. I thought Cyrus looked very confident and decisive on both ST and D. I think he makes the 53.
