Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I don't think Meriweather can be accused for avoiding contact!

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I wish him the best in ChiTown. His post departure remarks about BB and the Pats Org were classy.

If he has left the team he was always a piece of sh!t.

He was NOT good against the run.

The only time he didn't avoid contact was against a defenseless receiver or blowing up a smaller RB on a screen pass.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Safety has been a weak position on the Patriots since Rodney left. Meriweather (and
Sanders) were part of the problem, not the solution. Now, whether the guys they have on the roster will prove to be part of the solution is one of the interesting things to watch these first few games.

Yeah, I think the OP's piling it on a little too thick but he didnt play the position the way BB wanted and one guy out of position breaks the whole system down.

He avoids LEGAL contact. AFter the whistle I can hit hard a man in the ground too.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I am not ready to throw Meriweather under the bus just yet.

Do I think we can upgrade from Meriweather? Yes, I do.

Do I see that player on our current roster? No, I do not.

Which is not a knock on Sergio Brown, by the way, because I am sure the coaching staff knows a helluva lot more than I do, but he hasn't shown me that he is anything more than a strong special teams and extra-DBs package kind of guy. He may very well become "that guy", but losing Meriweather AND Sanders without seeing clearly who the rpelacements are, makes me a little nervous, I must admit.

IMO he gave us 4 good years, considering the average for an NFL Player is about 3.5, that is pretty good. But he was not progressing and if anything was regressing so time to move on. He also like to freelance, and not "do his job"...

Personally liked a lot of what he did, except for the stupid penalties.. not sure that we are better off without him.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I think it's too early to say if we are glad or not, but clearly BB thought it was in the teams best interest. I think we can make a case one way or another for keeping him or letting him go (as fans aand what we see).

Ultimately, our defense is about team defense. If Merriwether was out of position and causing issues with team defense/freelancing , then yes, I'm glad he's gone (as it only takes 1 blown assignment to create an opening for a big play).

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

So why did BB draft him in the first round (!) if he was such a bum? Seems like someone didn't do enough homework on this guy. He must have been something of a meat head in college as far as playing responsibilities and poor tackling go.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Meriweather might go down as the most questioned athlete 'WTF hes a Pro Bowler?' guy in Patriots history

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I saw a clip from NFLN that showed a receiver catch a ball and the Pats defender was in the process of bringing the receiver down when BW came along and crashed right into the tackler instead of the receiver. Both BW and the corner watched the receiver prance into the end zone. I thought to myself that that must be what guys are talking about when they say "takes poor angles". A most disgusting display of incompetence on that play, I must say. He also missed that, what would have been game ending interception in SB42.
He wants to forsake coaching so he can play off his instincts and make the big play. Trouble is...when the opportunity came, he rarely came through.
So yes. I can confidently say that I am glad he is gone. Just hope the next guy is more cooperative with Coach.

I thought it was Asante Samuel who missed the int?

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I think this is a little harsh on the guy.

He came in and contributed and two years ago he played really well and earned a pro bowl bid. Then it all started to go down hill. Starting with a bad camp last year and continuing into the season. As it turned out he was still our best option and he was able to turn that into mostly based on rep another pro bowl bid.

I think two things happened here. One has been pointed out which is he repeated the same errors to much. And two he reached his ceiling and if your not going up your coming down. Meriweather reached his potential in this system and it wasnt as high as his overall potential.

I still wish we somehow got a pick out of him as I feel there should have been value there but I think BB wanted him to fix his problems in camp and when he didnt AGAIN. It was time to go but giving the added number of players needing to be cut this year teams were less likely to trade at cut down.

In the end we got a few good years out of a player and we moved on we we realized he was never going to truly fit in the system. I suspect he will do pretty good in Chi town because even despite his deficiencies here he showed he was pretty good.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

ask again halfway into the season

would i have loved an upgrade? without a doubt

do i love that we got rid of him with no names as replacements? absolutely not

these no names had better step up to at least match meriweather level, otherwise we're gonna see QB's destroy us

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Asante dropped one that most people feel he should have clearly caught. He was a second late on his jump and the ball just went over him and this would have likely been it for the game.

However there was another play which Merriweather was in the area for and I believe he dove for it and it was just out of reach. Certainly another opportunity which could have ended the game. Difference being I am not sure Merriweather could have made the play it was just a bit to far out of reach.

Yeah, BB could tell the guy would go from a 3 year upswing including a good 2009, followed by a meh 2010, and that he wasn't coachable, would never learn to tackle, or take a good route to the play as a routine.

Pats have the best record since BB got here, the most players cut this year, picked up by other teams - yes by all means let's beat BB upside the head with a pipe for taking Meri.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Did this really require a new thread?

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

No. Every bad play in Patriots' history was now caused by Meriweather. Can you believe he threw that INT on the opeing drive against the Jets last year? That's when I thought I might hate him. But on last Saturday I knew for sure!
