I hope you're not saying Dion Lewis was a great player.
For a player to be considered great, he must play at a very high level over a long period of time. If Lewis were to play at the level he played this year for a long time, I would certainly consider him a "great" player. Besides being a very good blocker, he's got great explosion, is very quick, has excellent balance, hits the hole like lightning and runs with great field vision. I know he's fumbled a couple times, but since then he's carried the ball high and tight and puts two hands on it when he anticipates contact.

If you haven't noticed how special this kid has played, your eye test needs and eye test.

The waiver wire hysteria is hitting a new high.

Not dissimilar to picking up woodhead when we were so void of athleticism, the hope is high for this one.

He made the most of the opportunities he got playing for the best offense in the NFL. Great players make offenses great. Brady and Gronk are great players. Lewis is an opportunistic player. Lots of guys have great tools and never get to use them. He got put in a position to use those tools. That's great for him and the Patriots but he's not a great player. He's in the Kevin Faulk mold. Faulk was a great player for the Pats but he wasn't a great player.

He made a big impact, but I wouldn't go as far as calling his play 'special'.

EDIT: To further make my point. You don't replace great players on the waiver wire. When Brady or Gronk or Edelman go down there is no way in hell you bring someone in who can even come close to doing what they do for this team. Can you say for certain that Williams won't come in and do what Lewis did? I can't. He has a similar pedigree to Lewis when he got here. He has similar measurables. Whose to say he won't pick up the offense quickly and make an impact? I don't think we can *expect* that but I would not be surprised in the least. You put a guy with skills and a little brains on the field with a couple of HoFers big things can happen.

Nobody can say with certainty what any player signed will do.

I'm not talking about measurables or statistics. I'm talking about the "eye test". Your failure to recognize the quality of Lewis's play demonstrates a poor eye for watching the game. Your eye test failed the eye test.

I didn't fail to recognize the quality of his play. You added that bit on your own. I only said he wasn't a great player, which should be obvious. He was playing really well, it was a big loss.

I beg to differ.

Right, I said he made a big impact. Thereby recognizing the quality of his play.

Apparently I have a higher bar for special play than you. Brady is playing special. JJ Watt is playing special. I reserve that for a small handful of players. Lewis was running about 15th in YFS. That's awesome to have a FA come in and do that, plus he added a missing dimension to the offense. It doesn't qualify as special play, to me.

I'm not sure why you think I'm knocking the guy. You're reading a lot into my comments that just isn't there.

I don't think you're "knocking" the guy. I was questioning your eye for football.

I wonder why he did not practice, probably spending time in film review.

Agreed, he played great for the Patriots. The part that surprised me the most (which you correctly pointed out) was his very good blocking for the Pats, something I don't think he was known for in the past (to put it mildly). However, I saw many instances where he really stuck his nose into a block for the Pats, he just seem to be fearless in that regard.

The one instance I remember most clearly is actually earlier in the game where he was injured, when some unblocked, seemingly unstoppable linebacker was speeding like a missile for Brady, and Lewis just gave up his body and crashed into him, improbably (to me at least) completely stopping him. I thought "Wow!, this is a tough, tough dude". It is really too bad that he was injured in the same game, he is clearly a big loss.

Interesting seeing this post because I was just looking at stats on ESPN and saw Lewis's and thought what a great player. He was also very fun to watch play, he could make improv plays that no other NFL player since Barry Sanders could make. I cannot wait to watch him next season.

I hope you're not saying Dion Lewis was a great player.
He was a great player in 2015, his body of work is still TBD, but for the first half of this NFL season he was the best all purpose offensive weapon and most entertaining player to watch in the NFL.

I only said he wasn't a great player, which should be obvious.
I think this is getting a little hung up on the word "great." I think the idea that he isn't great is far from obvious, so I think you're a little off there.

But as you say, he clearly fit a need for the Patriots, and the Pats in general have done a good job finding receiving/third down backs (although Lewis was more than a third down player). That doesn't mean they can plug anyone into that, though. See the huge step down with White. We're hopeful about a new guy, because it doesn't seem like we have what we need on the roster.

OK. Question away.

So you haven't watched football since Barry Sanders retired?

I believe the question has been sufficiently answered.

If you think Lewis has the best improv moves since Barry Sanders, indeed, it has been answered resoundingly.

He may not be a "great player" but he played great before he got injured

Can we stop this ******** and proper definition of "great"?

Lewis was a GREAT PLAYER. He was the BEST satellite back in the entire NFL this year. That makes him GREAT. An injury does not take that way. When he has been healthy to play, he has proven his value. Injuries do not take away greatness.
If Gronk went down his rookie year with a career ending injury, it would not change the fact that he was a great football player. It does not matter how little he would have benefited his team, this is about him as an individual and his abilities.

If your abilities are great, you are great. Sometimes it doesn't work how we want, but it does not change the skill that is there.

Not every great player is a HOF player -- that's what takes consistency.

We should all have something better to do than argue about what the definition of "great" is. Watch him play, if he looks great, he's ****ing great.

That claim was made by another, not me.
