Patriots and Edelman discussing new contract

Wonder if this means talks with Talib are going nowhere so they've turned their attention to Edelman.

They're most likely, hopefully, multitasking and talking to both. Hopefully. Please.

Really hope he comes back, Edelman is a gamer. This team doesn't have many. Probably only would consider Brady and Mankins as the others.

I hope so too lol. Sucks to say but I think Talib is as good as gone man. A team will offer more then NE, at the end of the day money talks.

I'm actually surprised Sopoaga is still on the team, wonder what's going on with Vince. So many questions still out there with free agency just a couple days away.

Agreed.

If Edelman is not re-signed, then Amendola is a bargain at $4M a year. If Edelman is re-signed, then Amendola is not so much of a bargain.

What's changed is that Edelman has gone from an unproven guy who couldn't get more than a small 1 year deal to a guy who has proven to have great chemistry with Brady and who is going to command a pretty rich deal.

Pretty significant change in the circumstances.

Man.. with you guys it seems like just about any receiver wearing a Pats uniform is a pro bowler. I know 2013 was a little different. I have no idea how they work that magic. I see Edelman and I want the guy in a Hawks uniform. It is like the Pats find the talent on the cheap and they migrate new guys to keep the cap numbers in check. Then they STILL win.

I could be wrong but I think teams are allowed to start talking to the agents of the FA players tomorrow if so the pats could lose or gain players before march 11th

Saturday afternoon

Edit: Technically, that could be "tomorrow" since it's after midnight now

Yes, there is a "legal tampering" period, but players cannot sign with new teams until FA officially begins.

While they can't formally sign offers with anyone, I'm thinking that a lot more gets done with "handshake" deals (albeit over the phone) than they'd like to admit to.

I want the Patriots to make a play at Edelman but lose him to someone overpaying, and then hit on a POTENTIALLY more dynamic receiver like Nicks,Britt,Danario Alexander or Sidney Rice. I think Boyce and Amendola should be able to handle the slot.

Sopoaga is different from Gregory because no one is going to pay him that contract. With Gregory, he might actually land a decent contract in FA. With Sopoaga, you keep him to make it seem like your budget is constrained.

I do not really get the Edelmen love. The guy is a solid slot receiver in an offense that features the slot receiver with a QB that is deadly accurate in the short-mid range. I just do not see the need to resign this guy for lots of dollars.

There used to be illegal handshake deals before the deadline; now they are legal. Of course, as always, the parties are not bound until they sign a contract after 4 PM on March 11th.

I don't see why anyone would not like to admit that they have reached an agreement in principle. The rumors will fly and the media will report. We'll choose which media to believe.

To me, the league has added this time of negotiation and kept the home team in the game for the three days.

Where has it been indicated or reported that they're signing him for lots of dollars? I haven't seen a report with numbers as of yet. As for what they'll pay him, I would hope it's not more than a WR3 should earn. Otherwise he should be let go.

Because those ghuys have demonstrated they can handle the Patriots offense and quickly develop chemistry with Brady

The only think Amendola has proven he can handle is the ice tub. Why would you chose him over Edelman, who is more athletic, less injured, returns punts, and will play defense in a pinch?
