Pat Kirwin expects Cassel to air it out often on Sunday

I think hiring Kiffin would do Al in ... but now that they are both removed from that toxic waste site things could be ok.

That's ok, AL won't care. He's gone right to the limit in hiring his new HC. He won't be able to fire this dude, ever...

Here's a bit of what Pat's saying on the NFL Network's site:

Teams coming back from the bye highlight Week 5 storylines

Excerpts:

New England got a week to figure how to open up the offense for Matt Cassel, who will be making his third start. Note: It was the third game of Tom Brady's career when the Pats opened up the offense.
**But I know, Matt sucks and isn't Brady and stats and historical data are useless blah blah blah...

6. Patriots at a crossroads?

The Patriots had a chance to make a QB decision during their bye week and, as expected, they stuck with Matt Cassel. I admire the choice and agree with it. But now the team is on the West Coast for two weeks and a loss to the 49ers could trigger the panic button among some fans and media. Heck, the fans in Foxborough booed the team in the Miami loss. It's a rough crowd up there and as one coach said to me this week, "They may be a little spoiled."

How many times are some of you going to hold on to one decent sized pass from Cassel made over 10 quarters ago in play?

He has not thrown anything even half of that distance in the following 2 games so stop continuing with the 1 play of long so far - He is getting paid to make much more than 1 50 yard pass in the season and he better come through soon with several more or he won't be there at the #1 spot by December.
How many times are some of "you" going to whine because Tommy Brady is not the QB?

I'm curious, have you ever trained entry level personnel? Have you ever done any training where people were transitioning to greater responsibilities? Seriously neighbor, you're coming across as the kind of guy who'd insist a student was ready to lead a mountain rescue operation before they'd even been through basic survival school - then you'd fire them and file a CYA report with your boss.

I'd pay to see BB give the hand wringing wanker crowd the Tom Jackson "hand shake" after the season.

I don't know about that. I could just see the convo between coach and Jamarcus Russell.

"I hope so, Jamarcus, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am".

I don't think it's useful to draw comparisons between Brady's dink-and-dunk style in his first year in the league vs. Cassel's. Brady's offense ran that way because they didn't have the types of receivers Cassel has today. Going from dink-and-dink to airing it out isn't some established blueprint for the evolution of an NFL quarterback; one type vs. the other is largely based on the types of receivers you have, the coverage schemes of the defense, and the overall arm strength of the QB.

I don't buy the idea of sticking to a dink-and-dunk offense simply because you don't have faith in Cassel's ability to throw the ball downfield. You have to play to the strengths of your receivers, and this offense is designed to be opened up... if they are going to effectively castrate Moss and the rest of the receivers because Cassel doesn't have the ability to utilize them, then I have no idea why he would be leading this offense right now.

So it's pure coincidence that given similar situations (young, inexperienced QBs replacing established veterans after a serious injury), the same HC of the NEP would be using a similar approach? I'm of course assuming that you aren't accusing BB of being incompetent because he didn't instantly sign QB X to replace Tommy.

Perhaps Arena Football would be more to your taste. Or the old AFC sytle bombs away with Daryl Lamonica. It's a shame you're burdened by Bill Belichick's style which simply produces wins instead of long bombs in losing efforts.

What they fail to grasp is Bill chose to go with an inexperienced QB thoroughly familiar with the system over a veteran who might have more experience hitting downfield weapons. He chose system over weapons because one has won him 3 rings and the other even with Brady at the helm has won him zilch...

It was both a bold and a conservative move. That's our BB.

Going to bump this thread for the "know it alls"

Nice to see Cassel launch the ball, the 49ers gave Moss a ton of space off the line after that. So I guess the "know it alls" should STFU :singing:

You really need to learn the game and understand English. Both may be hopeless efforts.

I understand the game fine "know it all".

I also know that throwing the ball deep to Moss was a great call by Josh.

I would explain why but I am sure its past your bedtime.

Reading English is not your strong suit, eh? Who has said no we should not ever throw deep to Moss? Nobody. There's a world of football difference between bombs away style and the judicious use of going deep to our deep threat, when coverage is ripe. Josh called it pretty much right today. And what he did makes defending us more difficult in the future.
