I think it's the opposite. He was a #1 overall pick, after all. It's more like "finally, he's good".

Right, but I think the emotion comes more from the fact that he hasn't lived up to it for the most part until now. The fact that he was "next in line"/another one of those Manning/Luck Chosen One types back in the mid 2000s definitely helps. However, Alex Smith isn't getting built up the same way for being #1 overall and finally being decent. He hasn't been quite as good as Palmer has been this year but he's been more consistent for longer.
