If we may make a baseball digression for a moment here, did anyone notice the words of Hank Steinbrenner, George’s son, explaining the decision to lowball Joe Torre, who walked away as Yankees manager today?

“The objective of the Yankees since the ’20s has been to win the championship every year, just as the objective of (Vince) Lombardi with the Packers was or (Bill) Belichick and the Patriots,” Hank said. “None of us think we can win the championship every year, but that’s the goal. Period.”

Hank Steinbrenner apparently has a few things to learn about his constituents. Can you imagine a Boston sports executive explaining what they were looking for in a head coach by comparing him to Torre?

Yes - actually John I can imagine a Boston Sports executive comparing a potential coach to Torre.

There's a helluva lotta respect for Torre around here - and that's saying a lot given the hatred for the Yankees. And in fact most Red Sox fans are loving the fact that the Yankees just weakened themselves by effectively firing one of the best coaches in baseball - and in particular one of the best coaches FOR a team like the Yankees with so many egos to juggle...

I think Tomase is underestimating New England Sports fans that we can't see past the uniform to know that Torre's a good manager.

A great many people, myself included, believe that BB is the greatest active coach in any sport.
