Something happened this morning where threads of which I've read the most recent post are bolded as if I haven't read the most recent post.

Odd.
For some time now, i've had the OPPOSITE effect:
threads i have not yet read ... spontaneously shed their bold.

Could it be cookies?
This is one of only two sites i let insert them.

Same here. Both that this is only one of a few sites I allow cookies to be stored for, and threads not yet read lose their bold, but only in the morning when first checking the site. Sometimes it's after the first post I read... I log in, see all the bold threads, click one, read, come back to the forum listing and they're all marked as read. From there on it usually works the rest of the day.
