There's a reason motorcycle insurance doesn't have personal injury protection coverage.

Was stuck in bumper to bumper LA traffic one evening and a big, no helmet guy on a bike was moving through the heavy traffic at a clip. Soon we saw him a couple hundred feet ahead flying through the air going towards our right. Much, much later we got a look of him up against a chain link fence. All alone. Waiting on the coroner, no doubt. Passersby slowly, I mean snails pace, going past, getting a good look in silence.

Cause of death: Stupidity. BTW, PIP insurance exclusion varies by state. We have PIP insurance here

There's no helmet law here and locally I see most more riders without one. To me that's insane. I've been riding since I was a kid and in spite of having gotten up close and personal with the pavement very few times I'm keenly aware of how little it takes for a bike to go down. In fact, it's that awareness that's helped keep me upright. I ride like everything out there is trying to kill me, among many other safe riding habits that includes not leaving the driveway without my helmet securely in place and never riding between lanes. At low to moderate speeds that brain bucket could well spell the difference between a couple of days dealing with road rash and replacing some cosmetic parts vs being a veg. That said, living in the sticks I don't ride on the highway all that often anymore. When I do, if it's going to be for any length of time, I usually stop and take my helmet off. If I go down at 70+ the idea of my melon staying intact is not appealing.

I do TBI and forensic work.

No offense, but folks like you are going to put my kids through college

None taken. In the immortal words of the great American prophet Jimmy Buffett, 'I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead'
YMMV

??? A bit of lyrical poetry that's lost to me. Anti-marriage commentary, perhaps?

In other news, I got my 2010 oil-eating Corolla up to 70 mph yesterday on Route 2 -- 178k miles and counting. Hoping to have enough dough saved for a new car in about two years (I don't believe in monthly payments).

Not sure I want to know the how/why of drawing that from it lol.
It's from Jimmy Buffett's 'Growing Older But Not Up' a harmless musically unimpressive tune loosely about the foibles of aging, best enjoyed after a boat drink or 3.

I always found these the Buffet words to live by, "I like mine with lettuce and tomato. Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes."

'Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer'
ofc me I'd want the drafty big and the pickle ON the burger but TBH the bride's habit of applying the 'wife tax' to my fries and side pickles probably has a lot to do with that. For @ 50 years now I've ordered an extra side of fries or rings because she 'doesn't really want any' with her order.

Smart fella

Yeah, people clutching pearls on driving over 100mph...and here's me

To be fair, after 9pm on the 101 or 60 here in East Valley (Phoenix metro), I've been casually passed on both sides while doing over 100.
I used to go to grad school at sam Houston state in Texas and id constantly get passed going 90.

It was like I was going 30. Not only that but people would watch full on movies in their center console. I saw it dozens of times. Unreal levels of not caring about the people around you.

Having broken triple digits a few times in my life, I will assume his car was far better able to handle those speed than mine were... Pape you fool, I'm sorry but 87 wranglers were never meant to top 100... Wtf was I thinking???

Oh, I wasn't... Just like sanders wasn't... Stupid idiot I opine having learned my lesson that such foolishness will get you killed
I had an 8 cylinder Monza Hatchback in high school, hit 110, fastest ive ever drove.

That's wild. I like driving too much to get into that silliness. I don't even like having the GPS on lol

Unless your name is Logan or Wade.... yeah, probably should observe as many precautions as you can to preserve that ol' body of yours.

For most of my life I kept it below 120 MPH but a few years ago I had a Porsche 718 Cayman that I couldn’t get squirrley even if I tried (which I did) and I hit 150 MPH on I-89 in northern Vermont. That was stupid and I’ll never do anything like it again. But it was pretty exciting!

From back in my newspaper reporting days I can't begin to recall the sheer number of murdercycle accidents/fatalities I had to cover. From biker friends I understand the lure of it. But I have yet to meet a longtime enthusiast who hasn't put their bike on the ground, either from road conditions or traffic. Usually, it's something unforeseen beyond their control vs. taking unnecessary risk. I'll never forget reporting on a guy who was airlifted after hitting a guardrail at high speed leaving pieces of himself on it.

Nicest car I ever owned was a BMW 740IL which I once drove from Mass. to Florida via the scenic Interstate 81 thru the Appalachians. So many massive steeps, I finally determined no cops with radar would be tracking speeders on the big inclines. For a 3-mile stretch, I maintained 140MPH which is the speed the car's governor kicked in. The big, quiet sedan felt like it was going 50mph.
Germans make a fine car.

Way back in the day, was heading from NYC to Vermont on the Taconic Parkway, a very fun road to drive on. Big rolling hills...and was I flying the entire trip (in a Volvo), until a cop nabbed me on a steep down hill.
Officer asked: Do you know how fast you were going?
I replied: I'm guessing 88-90.
He responded: I got you at High Speed of the Day (93)
After my passengers cheered my #1 status out loud, I countered with: Well Officer, you got me a downhill.
He laughed....and issued me a $50 No Seat Belt ticket and sent me on my way.

Lesson learned....cops like downhills / stick with uphill speeding.....and if they pull you over, be courteous and honest

Ah, the TSP is truly a wonderfully fun drive. The Taconic used to be part of my daily commute. It was the site of one of my best exercises of car control, on a memorable dark and rainy Halloween evening. I was on my way to friends’ Halloween party up near Mahopac, a bit late and enjoying the road. At the time I was driving a Dodge Tradesman van. Stiffly sprung so running empty the suspension was very honest, not much body roll in the curves. Just north of the Saw Mill there was a sweeping left hand curve with a sheer rock wall on the right (outside), on the left was a 3” square steel guardrail, two lanes with no shoulders on either side. Entering the curve I was in the left lane, passing a slower car, and as I was alongside they were apparently intimidated by the rock wall and started drifting left squeezing me towards the guardrail with nowhere to go. As I laid on the horn I also shifted left so we didn’t hit each other, until I could just hear a slight whisper of sound from the left rear corner of the van.

When I safely reached my destination and inspected it, I found that the lip or rim around the left rear wheel well had lost the finish coat of paint where it kissed the guardrail.

The primer was pristine. There was no metal deformation at all.

That was just the first of two times that I scraped a coat of paint off that van without bending metal! The other time someone pulled out of a driveway as I was driving past and I had just enough time to steer away far enough to keep the metal undented while losing a bit of paint. That time was more luck, but the first time on the TSP was purely precise vehicle placement.

Yep...back in my speed demon days, I use to get my Ford Taurus up to a screaming 70MPH....yep yep. /jk How people enjoy blasting by people going slow is something I will never get AND one of the reasons I won't ride a bike here in FL. That is ANY type of bike, whether electric, mountain, scooter, crotch rocket kawasaki etc, or hog....nope. One of the first things I saw here was some dude going through an intersection and someone deciding to go (coming in the other direction, turning into him)...and him going airborn and sliding about 50 feet on the 100 degree asphalt. Just...nope. Well that and the thought of some blue hair going right through me from behind when I'm at a stop light...

Now we know why he didn’t run the 40. Why run when you can drive.
