That's what I'm curious about. Sacks are overrated. One sack a game doesn't change a game but if he can maintain the edge and push the pocket consistently then sign him and the occasional sack is a bonus.

I'll settle for a couple of pressures that force the QB to throw off balance incomplete

I know you were joking, but when signing a player from another team's PS, I believe you have to keep the player on the active roster for 2-3 games before you can cut them.

Quickly going through the Arizona v Seattle game they only used him in passing situations. He got burned for a TD by allowing the TE who was picking him up in pass protection leak out into the flat for a screen pass. It looks like Seattle just told him to pin his ears back and get after the QB so am not sure if he can set the edge and create pressure or not. But I didn't see him out there for any running plays but that doesn't mean much either given Seattle's Defensive line.

I'll watch a few more of his games because I'm curious if this is how they always used him or if it was because they were facing a rookie pocket passing QB (Stanton) rather than a running QB.

If he comes he will be signed at Vet Min, I'd like to save him until last few weeks of the season to see what he has, if he can still pull the moves then I'd like to see what he can do in the playoffs. It be a nice luxury to have him come in 3rd down situations.
It all depends how physically able he is going to be.

Has seemed for a while now that BB's D has not featured a pass rusher, the Pats D seems more focused on setting the edge with an occasional sack.. not sure how Freeney would fit in to this defense..

In a world without max roster sizes it is a different story but I am not sure you can afford to spend a roster spot on an old situational pass rusher that only has third down value. People like to bring up Long as a comparison but I dont see it. Long was more competent at dropping into coverage or setting the edge than Freeny at this stage.

As a situational pass rusher, he may still have value. But I don’t see him coming here. The Pats don’t seem like the kind of team that would cut one DE that can’t stop the run and bring in another, older, DE that can’t stop the run.

As a seven time Pro Bowler, three time first team All Pro, and a 3 down starter...I'm betting he can follow a game plan. Besides, at this stage in his career, his assignment will be as a Kill the QB specialist

If BB agrees, we'll sign him. I say not. No longer a 3 down player. Too narrow capabilities for the 46.

They are. Absolutely. Stopping the run, setting the edge, collapsing the pocket and pressure all are much more valuable than sacks.

Yes Ivan a sack can change a game. I agree and should have written a sack doesn't always change a game. Pressures do, stopping the run does etc etc.... But you're right. A sack can change a game.

The defense has to work as a unit. Maintain the edges and control the LOS. If they can generate pressure and get a sack from that pressure great if it's only pressure they're still forcing the QB to throw the ball into dime or nickel coverage.

Maybe Freeney can do that but if he's just going after the QB without regards to the LOS or edge containment his 1 sack every two games are practically worthless. My concern with Freeney is that he simply rushes the QB.

Patriots' defense ranks 12th in the NFL and I don't think they have a sack leader in the top 50.

Btw: Jacksonville has a wicked defense. 1st in sacks, 1st in TO differential and 1st in pts per game allowed. Damn.
