I took over custody of my daughter when she was about 2, after I found out she was mine (her mom had a bit of a crack habit).
As ArchAngel007 said, raising a daughter is the most rewarding thing you will ever do.
I can honestly say I saved her from a miserable childhood and nothing can take that away form me.
She's 29 now and has almost 10 years in the Navy...working on her degree and officer's package. She's an instrument technician and served some time on the George H W Bush (carrier).
I pushed her into buying a townhouse in San Diego 2 years ago and she just sold it for about $100,000 profit (minus the 10 grand I loaned her for the down).
In the beginning kids are high maintenance...basically a gut and a toothless grin. The terrible 2's is a real thing. They basically lose their mind.
From 3 on they become interactive and wonderful. Hang in there.
